A few more pics of some rarer aircraft...!

A very nice Miles Messenger. One of only two in the country..?
...

And a very nice Chippie, if I'm not mistaken..!
...

Another rare aircraft, the resident BA with a Pobjoy radial engine...
...

...and a close-up of the engine. Note the geared propellor drive...Missing it's exhaust manifold...being replaced at great expense...engine needs work...etc...etc...!
...

A regular racer: Geoffrey Boot, (a regular contributor to Pilot Magazine), and his lady wife with their Sia Marchetti race aircraft, (less cannons and missile pods)...!
...

Cheers all...!

Paul.

P.S. sorry about the quality...never quite the same when reduced to 640X480...Buggar...Cry...!
LOL...!

Very nice Paul. I love that BA Swallow. Cheesy

Beautiful. Might be a few more around but they're getting rare now. The problem is the all-wood construction. We lost G-AJOE in Holland a couple of months ago. Fortunately the pilot & passenger were OK.

800 width is definitely better.

PS. You can reduce the JPEG compression to suit in IrfanView.

Hi Kev...!

...what do you mean "THING"?....bleedin' cheek...!....it's our annual fantastic air-race...!
LOL...!
In these particular shots, only the Sia Marchetti with Geoffrey Boot and his lady wife on board actually raced...

Doug would have been interested with the Miles Messenger and the BA Swallow, he is familliar with them.
The Swallow is a resident aeroplane at Shobdon.
The Miles is an occasional visitor.
...and Doug would also be aware of Geoffrey Boot, (the Pilot Magazine contributor, racer, instructor, owner of an expensive aeroplane less rockets and cannons, etc),...!
LOL...!

Cheers Kev...!

Paul...happy, if slightly sunburnt... 8)...!

Racing yes but Reno it ain't. The King's Cup is a traditional air race. It was revived in recent years but is a shadow of its former self. The King's Cup was originally a cross-country held at various airfields in the UK, including Shoreham. The first one was held at Croydon Airport in 1922. Former winners include Sir Alan Cobham in 1924 & a 19 year old Alex Henshaw in 1933. Henshaw won it again in 1938 in his famous Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF. (Fred Dunkerley won it again in the same machine in 1953.) One of the BBMF Hurricanes took part in 1950. Wearing the civilian registration G-AMAU, it (PZ865) was entered in the Kings' Cup Air Race by HRH Princess Margaret. Flown by Group Captain Peter Townsend it achieved second place.

Indeed. Miles Aircraft has a long association with the King's Cup. http://www.miles-aircraft.com/Menu_page.html
In the 1935 race Miles racing aircraft took the first 3 places. F.G. Miles took part in a new aircraft named the Sparrowhawk designed specially for the race by his wife Blossom. http://www.century-of-flight.freeola.com/racing/aircraft/jan2004/Sparrowhawk.htm The prototype Sparrowhawk G-ADNL was purchased by Fred Dunkerley in 1950. At his request Miles converted it into the Sparrowjet powered with two small jet engines & Dunkerley won the 1957 race.

PS. Quote:
The 25th King's Cup Race

Highlight of the July 14 event at Coventry was the debut of the Miles Sparrowjet, much of whose airframe had raced as a Sparrowhawk from 1935 to 1950.   It was now powered by a pair of small French turbojet engines.  The race was for one lap of a 42-mile triangular course, and was won by Fred Dunkerley in the Sparrowjet at 228 mph.  Placing second was J. Rush in a Miles Falcon Six at 172.75 mph, and third was Walter Bowles in a Miles Monarch at 137.75 mph.
