It is with great regret that I have to report the crash of MJ-10 (75% scale Spitfire replica) HB-YIZ. Tragically the 39 year old pilot Stefan Haug was killed in the crash http://www.nzz.ch/2005/08/20/vm/newzzECM7SY4G-12.html
Stefan was a great enthusiast of the replica movement and encouraged people to chase their Spitfire dreams. A sad loss to our close community of builders Sad

Björn kindly translated the article for me. Stefan was flying at an airshow when the plane went down, the reason is unknown. And yes that is Stefan flying in the photo...

Here is Björns translation;

"Spitfire replica crashes at airshow in Dittingen"

Pilot dead.

During a flying meeting on Saturday afternoon, a small aircraft crashed in Dittingen in the canton Basel-Land. The 39 year old pilot died in the crash. The cause for the crash is unkown.

The crash happened, accoding to the canton's police, at 15.35h during the 26th airshow in Dittingen. The single-seat and single-engined aircraft, a Spitfire replica, fell into difficult terrain in a remote side valley after a steep dive.

The crash site is located in the district of Röschenz. The wreckage was located within a few minutes by a swiss rescue helicopter. Any help for the pilot came too lately.

According to the police, the pilot had a valid license. The  aircraft was permitted and equipped with the corresponding grants. The cause of the crash is the subject of investigations. The police of Basel-Landschaft and the Büro für Flugunfalluntersuchung (Bureau for air crash investigations) are involved. The crash site was cordoned off spaciously.

Despite the tragic crash, the organizers decided to continue the airshow on sunday.
