Just went for another Vigi ride around my local town....

That brings me up to 4 or 5 hours..

Anyway..

The instructor who i went up with, recommended i take the RAF gliding scholarship when i turn 16....

Does anyone have more information on this?

Well done Andy. Well worth getting a GS if you can.

Have you thought of applying for one of the RAFA flying scholarships too once you are 16. I first got into flying (other than AEF/VGS flying every now and then) on and RAF Flying Scholarship but I think they discontinued them a couple of years back, but according to the Air Cadet sit they still exist, though there's no mention of them on the RAF-Careers website...

I havn't heard of the RAFA flying scholarship before..

.. What does it consist of and do you know how many hours.. Roll Eyes

Ohh.. and do you know how much studying it takes.... i already know a fairly heafty amount already..
Its just trying to balance it between school 8)

I wouldn't worry about the studying. From what I understand the RAFA Scholarships consist of up to 45hrs flying training to get your JAA PPL. This of course is the minimum number of hours required, but if you do the flying in a concentrated period (ie the school summer holidays) you should have no problem completing it in that time. I did the old scheme which was 20 hours, which was completed in under 3 weeks...

Having said that, it looks like only 2 are awarded per year, although there are other schemes about. Air Cadet magazine is worth a look, particularly if your squadron has some old copies too covering the last year, as it'll mention them some where. The other option is to ask your local RAF Careers office. It's never too early to get in contact with them - I was on there lists when I was 12 years old!

Sounds ideal, and a lot of fun

..
But a bit rare if only two people get accepted a year... which is a shame..

I'll ask around at cadets and see what they can find out.. I do have some year old air cadet magazines stowed away somewhere....... i'll look through them see if i can find anything....

As I said, it's changed a lot now but in my day you were recommended for a flying scholarship from the gliding course. The cadets taking them at the club I worked for all ended up with a PPL. That doesn't look possible now.

Mmm, thats what I was referring to Doug. Unfortunately the link on that page on the Air Cadet isn't the correct link for the RAF Careers site, which doesn't bode well for an RAF organisation...

Anyway, I had a thorough search of the RAF Careers site, and the Flying Scholarship is no longer listed under their sponsorships and scholarships.

It's an unfortunate situation, as there used to be over 100 scholarships (it may have been up to 400 or 500 at its peak) awarded each year. Unfortunately with the RAF only recruiting 50 or 60 pilots per year at the moment, and the general situation in the aviation world, there is no longer any reason for the RAF to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on enticing people to the service.

Just did that as well.. but dont they pay Deltaweb to update it..

Quite, and it seems the day of the 'dream job' of pilot has passed.. people would rather be doctors or lawyers..

I expect there are still thousands who would love to do it, it's just (militarily at least) the demand has waned (and the armed forces aren't particularly fashionable in today's very liberal society)...

However, always remember this:

Someone has to be a future pilot - and it could be you...

...you've just got to do your best, and achieve as much as you can!

ps - I was unfortunate to be on a squadron as a cadet where I knew more about the flying opportunities than the staff did! Wink

I wouldn't mind one bit 8)..

lol we get about 3 flying slots a year.. and with about 20 cadets.. its pretty hard getting places..

Although when they ask you how many times you've been flying.. i tend to knock it down a few.. Grin
