Sky now reporting that "onlookers" (ie, people who potentially don't have a scooby what they're talking about, but may do) saw both crew and passengers leaving the aircraft... Lets hope there is good news...

I can testify to the thunderstorm!

I live about 10 K from Pearson...we were under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time and a tornado warning as well.

Pearson had a DC-9 run off the runway back in 1978...exact same place. After that accident they re-profiled the ravine to absorb crash energy if it ever happened again.

Todays miracle would suggest that it worked.

A very big GOOD SHOW to the emergency crews involved and the aircraft crew for averting a certain disaster.

There's several topics running on this subject. Latest BBC News reports suggest there are no serious casualties. The media loves this sort of thing & their comments are at the best unreliable. No point in speculating so it's best to wait until the facts are known. Please read Flying Trucker's request in the Real Aviation forum. http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=genav;action=display;num=1...

The GTAA (Greater Toronto Airport Authority) is officially reporting 14 minor casualites.

It's local news here...so we are getting overloaded. Smiley

Did anyone else besides me find it sick when the news agencies on TV learned there were no fatalities, they stopped coverage of it?

Reuters and the Globe and Mail both have a good articles up:

Just amazing.  I'm about two hours east of TO myself; I was up flying at YPQ this evening and it was all we were talking about at the airport.  It's fantastic to have what could have been a horrible story end on such a high note for once  Smiley.

That's disgusting, those news agencies care more about deaths than the severity of the disaster Angry Angry

To be fair to the news agencies...theyhad been covering the story non-stop for over 3 hours by the time the news of no casualties was released.

After that news there wasn't much else left to say.

I'll say this: the fact of no deaths was far less a 'miracle' (as the media is calling it) than a victory for the real heroes here: the flight attendants.
Emergency services did an excellent job; but it was the FA's that got the doors open and herded 300 panicking people to safety.

Most people think FA's are just there to serve drinks and plump pillows. In fact; they're highly trained professionals and this incident I think really shows their true value.
Hey; I appreciate a nice smile and a sandwich at 30,000ft. as much as the next guy but when something bad happens; I'm glad they're there to take charge. Smiley

Cheers!

I haven't bothered watching any of the media coverage. Much prefer to read the official report when the full facts are known. From what little I've seen, everyone concerned from the aircraft crew to the emergency services did a highly professional job. This is no more than I would expect from any major airline at an international airport but I'm delighted it all worked out. The media is all too ready to criticise when something goes wrong. A little credit wouldn't go amiss when someone gets it right.

From what I can see the only miracle was that this happened close to the airport boundary & within easy reach of the emergency services. If it had been in a remote spot the story might have been different.

Too right on all points, Hagar. Smiley

I hate the term 'miracle'. This wasn't a miracle - it was an excellent piece of work by trained professionals.
And now of course the media hawks are inventing mistakes and potential charges, etc. turning fine details (of which they're largely totally ignorant) into major problems. To hear them talk; that aircraft was a doomed rattletrap with idiot pilots just waiting for one grey cloud to blow up on. (An exaggeration, but not by much. I watched the latest press conference - you know what journalists are like. Roll Eyes )

That's one of my pet peeves-when some 'divine intervention' is acknowledged over the skill, training and courage of people.  That's right people are able to do incredible things, without the help of divine intervention.

Go figure.

Glad everyone made it out OK.  Surprised a bit, considering the fire damage to that A340.  Mom says the news shows it was pretty well gutted out by the blaze.
