This is a big deal for me... used to go out Mondays back when I worked mixing sound in a theater, but it's been years, since I usually have to get up early on weekdays. But a friend urged me to come out to catch an early set of this great singer Kristeen Young, at a little place in Manhattan. She was amazing, and I didn't even care that it was way too loud for such a small room; just like the old days.
The icing on the cake that made it all worthwhile: turns out my new friend, who's a guitar player, knows Tony Visconti (who's producing Kristeen)- got to meet and talk to him a bit; he even bought me a beer!
He's a nice guy, considering what a freakin' legend he is!! He's produced some of my favorite music ever (those who don't know-look him up; his own website has a complete discography)I was in awe; very unusual for me. I didn't bother him with the usual "love your work..." stuff, and he mostly complained about the timidity of record companies these days (trying hard to get somebody to take a chance on Kristeen). Met another friend of this guitar player who's a musician/soundman, and we gabbed about soundman stuff, etc. for a while. I wasn't bored for a minute; that's also very unusual for me.
Then, pushing the sleep envelope a little more, I stopped by another joint on the way to the train to see an old lady-friend of mine who DJs Monday nights.... had to force myself to say goodnight after one beer and toddle home to bed; we were getting into a heavy "catching-up" conversation... wound up hitting the hay about 2AM, and now I'm up again; off to work soon.
Glad I got motivated- that was a pretty cool night out!!
