I want to know what you people think of dreamtheater. For one, I think their the best band in the world. All the members are one of the best in the instrument they play.

And with their new cd, octavarium. I think you can see what I mean. They rock harder that life itself. Literaly. Shocked

Collectively they are one of the most talented groups out there, that is why you never hear about them, they play "too many notes" for most mainstream music fans.

I believe that DT have improved alot with Octavarium.

Much of their music used to feature a bit too much widdly widdly noodling with ten minute solos kind shoe horned into the song but Octavarium is awesome. The songwriting is of a much higher standard than usual, finally showing they have the talent to write decent songs as well as do a thousand notes per second solos.

I've got tickets to see them in October and rumour has it they are going to cover a classic album in it's entirety on that night. They have covered Maiden's Number of the Beast and a Metallica album so it should be a good un'.

Rock on,

Pete

P.S. Other Dream Theater works to listen to are "A Change of Seasons" and "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory" very cool 8)

DT has a new CD?  Cool!  I have all of their CD's except this latest one.  I pretty much listened to DT almost exclusively for about 3 years straight and burned myself out.  I guess it's time to get back into them.

..oh yea, I have a few "bootleg" videos, including one of when they were Majesty shot in Mike Portnoy's basement.

Well... obviously they are very good musicians, but... does that make a good band? I don't think so. To me their music lacks emotion and I think that emotion is the most important thing in music. I like listening DT once in a while though. And it always amazes me!

Porcupine tree is awesome, Opeth is a very interesting mix of styles, the other two I'll have to look into.

You guys should give Pain of Salvation a try if you like that kind of progressive music.

http://www.progarchives.com/

Check out this site, many of the band pages have streaming samples of their music.
