Can someone remind me of the differences between the Standard and Pro versions? Is it just that the Pro version includes the modelling program?
If I want to do repaints, and make customisations to the FS world, does this mean I ought to have Pro? Or can I do all the same things with Std and downloaded utilities, etc from Simviation or elsewhere on the net?
I guess the real question is, what
can't
I do with Std?
Cheers,
Da Geezah

Pro comes with the gmax pack, it also has some extra aircraft and their gauges
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

No, most everything you need, including GMax for creating new aircraft/scenery opjects, is available for free.
Check out the Design Forums for more specific help.

Thanks guys. I just found GMax on the net and have downloaded it to give it a try - I'm building a very dodgey looking P-38 from the tutorial at the moment (well - mine looks dodgey, anyway
).
So once you have created a model, like my P-38, how do you get it into FS's virtual world, and how do you make movable surfaces react to the program? Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere - just point me in the right direction, and I'll go look it up. This is probably the wrong place to ask, anyway?
Cheers

Head down to the aircraft and 3d design forum and you'll find answers to all your gmax questions

Ah - now I'm a little worried! I went to the other forums, where you guys suggested and found another post asking similar questions to me, but the replies categorically stated that I would need the Pro version....
Now, I've found G-Max, and Microsoft's FS2002 SDKs (including make model) all available on the net, so I'm inclined to go with you, but before parting with my readies on the cheaper non-pro version, has anyone out there actually done this and can put my mind at rest?
Cheers all,
DG

OK - I won an auction on eBay (finally), so should have a copy of FS2002 in about a week's time
It's the standard version - but based on what I've read from various sources, I'm hoping that I'll still be able to load my own mods from GMax. I'l complete this thread with a post that says yay or nay once I've found out.

No worries! The key to addons/modifications lies in the program employed, not the version of flightsim you are using (well, between FS2002/2002Pro/2004 anyway). Whatever items you are building in GMax (or FSDS in my case) will work nicely in FS2002 standard. This is the sim that I started out with and created an aircraft and some scenery items that work quite well in it. I'm not an expert in repaints by any means, but it appears the key once again lies in the paint or graphics program you employ, just as in the design program used to create aircraft/scenery objects. You've already started on your way with Gmax, everything will fall into place once you become accustomed to it. Be forewarned, all of this can become very addictive...
