Hi ChrisM,

Don't despair, you haven't wasted your money on buying that new card, it's just not configured correctly or maybe the fs9.cfg file is messed up like Jared implied, though your GRAPHICS CARD INFORMATION
shows that it's detected correctly.

What we actually need to help you here is your "chipset" info which we get by googling up your mainboard details. In order to do that we need your mainboard model number and revision if  possible, and if you provide the correct info, we can go further.

The "delete" key must be pressed immediately after the RAM count appears on  the boot screen to enter BIOS settings, and indeed, it may not even be the delete key, as some boards use different keys to enter bios settings. Consult your manual or download one if you need it to find out what keypress to use.

Sometimes boot screens are hidden with a bios option which enables a splash screen logo instead, if you get to bios, it's a good idea to turn that option off so you can see what's going on at bootup. Boot Logo screens are pretty effective at keeping you in the dark about your system specs and configuration.

Basically, once in the bios settings (or CMOS settings), you want to set your AGP aperature or "window", set your agp multiplier to 8x if your mainboard supports it, and enable any other support in there your AGP graphics card needs.

Your upgrade should be producing profound improvements in your graphics display, once you see the effects of it, you will be very happy indeed.   Wink

I think this is down to your systems configuration, ChrisM, run 3D Mark 03 from here http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=576

run the benchmark, and compare your results to mine, which you will find here http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3849223

Upload your results to Futuremarks "Online results browser", then I can compare my system to yours, it may well give me a clue as to your problem.

Your current spec certainly should run FS9 beautifully. Wink

Paul.

This Thread may be of interest to you, it worked for me..... http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=COF;action=display;num=111...   Wink

Thanks for the links to the bench mark aps, etc. ... very interesting stuff. Question, why are you using the 3D Mark 03 instead of the 3D Mark 05?

And i have the latest drivers for this card and motherboard Wink

Chris: Earlier you posted you have: "Video BIOS version = 5.43.02.04 "  That is the version that came with my 6600 GT install disk too, but it is not the latest version for the Nvidia cards. I have v66.93 dl'd and installed now, and there is also a newer version, 71.89 available. I think this might make a difference and should be updated. Just be sure to uninstall your currant drivers before installing new ones.

I got into bios, and the mobo doesn't support 8X, but I changed the memory aperature 128MB and fiddled with some other settings.  I installed FSAutostart and did some other things, and now thankfully i am getting about 22fps at heathrow in the default cessna, and 85% traffic.

Thanks everyone Grin

Ignored? here? Never !  Kiss

Update by all means! I use 77.30's and very good they are.

Also, I have my AGP appeture set to 256MB, if its 128MB I get lock ups for some weird reason.  Roll Eyes Undecided

Because, 3D Mark 05 will stress a 6800Ultra, never mind my card! - Watching a benchmark program run at 0 - 9 fps isn't fun, 3D Mark 05 is really for the next generation 7800 series cards, which incidentally, launch in the UK in 7 days. Wink

Also, the download was massive and I already have 03 installed!  Grin

Another tool I found that makes a big difference in performance is the PCI Latency Tool

You can get it here with more info on it: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951

Hehe... thought that would get some attention.  Grin

Just wanted to be sure you saw that... drivers can really cause problems if they aren't up to date.  Wink
Hope you get your's going... I have the same 6600GT card (mine by XFX) and I'm amazed at the improvement over my original Dell Nvidia FX5200 that came with the computer.

I was trying to get a reply from Chris about updating his drivers, he finally did.  Grin

You have a 6800 and I only have a 6600, and you said the Mk 05 is for the next generation 7800 series... that must be the problem, I ran the Mk 05 tests and it didn't run very well. I'll try the Mk 03 test and see how it goes, thanks.  Wink

I went to the Guru site to update my Nvidia drivers from my currant v66.93 and they have a whole bunch of different ones, how do I know which one to get? There is:

Forceware 77.30 Win 2000/XP,
Forceware 77.40 Win XP x64,
Forceware 7.50 Win 2000/XP,

???  ???  ???  ???

I also noticed the Nvidia site only has version 71.89 available for dl for Win XP/2000 ... why don't they have those newer versions above, are they beta drivers?

I have Windows XP home v2002 SP2
XF Nvidia 6600GT AGP 128

Thanks for your help,

Some are beta, some are approved, just sus out the details, sometimes you need to read the readmes or follow up the threads link about them to get more details.

Thanks, I did find the notes about the newer one being used by one of the games that just came out, etc. Guess I'll go ahead and upgrade.

By the way... the main demo in the 3d Mark 03 test, of the WWII bombers and fighters, is pretty fantastic, would love to see a game with that kind of realism; probably isn't too far away.  Grin

Running the Mark 03 test I did much better, with fps of 194 on the WWII flight , and around 60 fps on the rest of them.

Changing my bios aperature to 250 on my rig had very little effect on fps and actually decreased cpu tests a bit, so I changed it back to 128 MB.

Video Driver upgrading is a facet of geekdom that is highly over-rated. A video driver upgrade rarely ever provides any noticeable performance advantage. (an increase in benchmark scores from 14600 to 14700 for example, won't be detected by your brain). In fact, you can screw things up doing it, and often you'll measure a decrease in performance with new drivers.

IF you buy a new game and it has display problems, then a driver upgrade should be tried if other settings havent worked.

Actually, I've been flying a simulator for a few years now that is just like the 3d mark demo, and even better and more realistic than you would imagine. It's called IL2 Forgotten Battles and it's now in it's 4th major revision.
Popularly, the game "Pacific Fighters" is merged with it, and the online games can be awesome.
