Not quite sure how an aircraft download could cause that ???
Check your 'Settings/Air traffic control', make sure its turned up.
Look for the ai traffic file......FS2002\SCENEDB\ATC\Scenery\traffic.bgl.
If its missing or damaged (should be 11,087KB, 9/12/2001 if you havent modified it) you can recover it from your CD's.

It's quite likely you deleted a file named default.dp while tidying up your FS2002\Aircraft folder If it's not in your Recycle bin you can retrieve it from one of the CAB files on CD-1.

I Like Flight Simulation!
Have you replaced or renamed any of the default aircraft? Many of them are used as AI and the sim can't recognized them if you have futzed with them.

I had a problem like that, when i replaced default textures with my own. make sure for the titles of each texture, it has Paint1, Paint2 etc after the type of aircraft. Have a look at a cfg that you havent played about with to see how to do it.
I don't if thats your problem, but it worked for me
