I would much rather hear history, from a vet himself, than reading it in a book... when I first started watching "blacksheep squadron" on the History Channel and fell in love with the Corsair... when I read that Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington had been dead since the 80's it tore me up, I would have given anything to have gotten to have a conversation with him. it is such a shame when a War vet passes on...  Sad

He was a lucky one... so many gallant men died in that war.
My grandpa, who passed away over 20 years ago, served in an artillery unit in France in '18... he never talked much about it either, except for a few funny stories. But when he talked about the work they did helping the locals restore their towns and farms and clearing roads and whatnot, I could tell he was recalling some very grim images. But he made it through that year without a scratch, and even survived being laid up in Brest waiting for transport, only to get sick on the ship going home!

Its a shame as such an important piece of History passes away.
One wonders when the time will come for ourselves to be a part of such a history.

Well do you want to die and do you look forward to death? Wink

And actually I was thinking more in terms of being cut short  in a war, having re-read it with your comment I misinterpreted it. Grin

I think about that from time to time. In the back of my mind I keep expecting some huge and horrible war to break out that will involve all of us. I guess WW3... Roll Eyes

Don't want to get political here, but I place my bets on China, unless the EU doesn't brake up into fights first over the ailing constitution... Wink

1 in 4 people are Chinese.
in 20 or 30 years they will have the capabilities to crush the world in terms of power. They have reason for revenge because of their history too. They disagree with the western world and are a corrupt communistic country. They are very nationalistic and patriotic as a country.
I also believe that the US is really concerned about China's booming economy.

I was just expressing opinion. Wink

Just because a nation has the capabilities to crush the world it doesn't mean they will. Due to their huge population they have more to worry about at home than taking over the world and the only way they're going to cause any sort of conflict is if they decide it's time to take back Taiwan.

As far as i'm aware they have no quarral with the west and just because they're a communistic government it doesn't instantly make them corrupt and itching for world domination. Most nations are patriotic to their own country and if US has issues with China's economy then I suggest that the US is more likely to start WWIII than China.

You're not being very sensible. You know I mean that if there was a third World War, my bets are with China.

I am thinking in terms of history, the previous two world wars and also China's history. The Taiwan crisis you mention is a good example. A Communistic country has so many different ideas and of al the communistic coutries the world has seen I would brand China the most difficult to get on with - yes even worse than the USSR. There is a lot of grounds to have genuine concern. If the country has the capabilties, a nationalistic people and is all ready disagreeing with the world in terms of politics, human rights etc I'm sorry but I think it is almost in some respects a worser situation than 1930s Germany!

Unlike in the 1930s, there are enough nukes in the world to blast every single individuum to kingdom come. Breaking off a world war would be the most stupid thing to do!

That must be what they mean by "a strong defense for a lasting peace..." We'd have no more wars then -- we'd all rest in peace Cry  (and your survival insinct would have lost to your death-wish, Bjorn; true, it some day will -- how about 90 to 100 years from now, at least. May you have a well-directed and prosperous life until then).

If you look at history you'll realise that in both the previous world wars China actually did very little and wasn't an aggressor in either. Just because America views China as a threat, purely because of it's communist government doesn't mean they're planning to blow the world into itty bitty pieces.
