Best of FS9 List (Read 5465 times)

Any chance we could sticky this?

After Kirk Olsson released the Viper, the freeware design community really kicked things into high gear.  My goal is to create a list of the absolute BEST freeware aircraft and sceneries.

Don't add anything to the list that is "okay".  I'm talking a hands down winner -  the very best of the best.

I'll start.  HOPEFULLY this list won't be full of "Yeah I agree" type posts.  I'm trying to compile a true list.  Feel free to add to it, as I'm sure I will as I think of more add-ons.

My nominations, in no particular order are:

1.  The 737 Experience by Moach.
2.  Kirk Olsson's Viper.
3.  Meljet 747.
4.  Meljet 777.
5.  F-18 Hornet by Daisuke Yamamoto.
6.  Bacolod SuperScenery (animated) by Arch't. Ver Walter Gulfan.
7.  The Stearman Package by Dave Eckert.
8.  Airport Environment Upgrade by Chris Arrington.
9.  Project BlueSphere by Gerrit Kranenbarg.
10.  MAAM Reading, Pennsylvania scenery by Bill Womack, Kenneth Weik, Charles Dayhuff and Tony Fosler.
11.  Project AI - by Project AI.
12.  Terrain Mesh by Stephen Rothlisberger.
13.  Waterzone replacement water texture...can't find an author name, but Lemoncat/Spitroast built this one.
14.  Liquid Scenery by HoverControl.  (A must have for rotorheads!)

EDIT:  It's been asked already a few times to put links up for people who don't know how or are to lazy to look for them...problem is, I'm the guy who is too lazy to look for them.....I'll modify periodically with links.

Downloading it right now!^

Great Idea Hype!  Hope the mods will slap this onto the bulleting board!  I think we should also add where to find addons if they're not easily found at SimV, Nonodes, or AVSIM or other large FS sites.  That way half the responses wont be 'where to find' questions.

My nominations are some of the other big design houses for silver cigars:
~SGA DC-10 series,
~SGA DC-9,MD-80,717 series
~iFDG A320
~Posky 757s, A340s, 767sV4- the best of these types in freeware are definitely from POSKY.
Also:
~Boston Logan Intl Scenery by George Grimshaw
~Hong Kong International Scenery by Thomas Kwong
~FS Sky World?

Please don't forget the Project Tupolev TU154_V94. True it's a little difficult to learn, being so complex, but well worth the effort! The only thing I wish was that they would allow replacement of the Soviet nav system with a modern GPS for use outside Russia.

..mmmm....aircraft like the 737 Experience are wonderful as are individual airports for the guys who like to fly from them, but they don't do much for the Sim as a whole..IMHO.

For my money the two (freeware) things that do most for everyone are  Project AI and  the Rothlisberger World Mesh............... plus Waterzone water enhancement as a possible third...........

Without these FS9 would be a very dull place..........commoner

My top favorite is  David Maltby's collection all of them have a good mix of 3 great qualities: friendly to fly, pretty design and extended documentation.
http://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/

the Tu 154 from http://www.protu-154.com is also a gem but way too fussy complication in pre-required procedure. too tricky: starting the engines is long but rather easy: just follow the 3 pages of switch and press actions. But if you wish a working autopilot or navaids and ils, then come all a work to browse the forum to find about the various erratas in switch orders.
But when all this is completed this splendid model will give you GREAT TIME

Another piece of art is Erick Cantu's  'Vistaliners Boeing 727

1: it has VOR too
2: Use the INS or NAS doppler nav instead of the RSBN
3: There is a KLN90B GPS unit coming... probably all that you ever needed to satisfy your GPS needs as long as FS2004 will last as it will be an exact (project tupolev) simulation of it.

I second that Bill Lyons Tri Pacer, best single engine general aviation plane ever!  I have a few other payware single engine aircraft, and this now released freeware tripacer stands right along the ranks, if not better!

Veneaviones Citation II and their Turbocommander

Just to add, for Water, get waterzone.zip plus orik's water enhancements overtop of that, it looks great.

Got to add to this!

Essential freeware, in no particular order;

Ken Mitchell's Panels, a must esspecialy for any Airbus.
Simply the best, most easy to intall and bug free panels I have found with built in GPS display on the nav screen. On here or at Avsim.

ANY iFDG AC, I esspecialy like the A319.

SGA DC10 (I know it's been mentioned before but....)

Vitaliners classic 727.

Hovercontrol's 412. You want real? It takes about 10 mins to do the prefight and start the engines!!

Again SamDim's TU-114. Just stunning!

The FSFrance Concorde with the AB effects done by our own KillerBunny.

Again Any of David Maltby's classic airliners. Still can't believe they're free!

Dehaviland Super Otter from Stratojet. His only 'real' AC but it's great!

Also the Stratojet Albatross, fictional jet flying boat with a neat panel, full VC and cabin. Take off or land anywhere and cruise at 400kts, a real allrounder!

Any ISD scenery or airports. Rome LIRF is particularly good with annimated gates, buses, catering trucks, etc.

EDDW2004 - Bremen Germany by Oliver Pabst. Wow! A REAL airport! Busses bring your passengers, stairs go up to the doors, catering trucks, fuel trucks and even a departure board showing your destination and departure time. Upon landing you even have a 'follow me' car to, er, follow and a marshaler at the gate to tell you when to stop.

Again any scenery by Bill Melichar. His airports are stunning!

Heathrow building works scenery by Matthew Ministry. Not only ads the cranes and construction site for the new T5 but ads to T4 and other bits arround the airport as well. Worth getting.

The full B-52 package from Yaetsu Yoshimitsu / Hiroaki Kubota. Complete it with a Ken Mitchell panel and sound from Christoffer Petersen. Evil plane!

In fact, search for any sound by Christoffer Petersen. They are big files but worth it!

That'll do for now, there are loads more that i'd reccomend but these are essential!!

Been mentioned before but jordan moores bell412 (www.hovercontrol.com) is an amazing helicopter, and voz is one of the best scenery enhancements that you can get (unfortunate its only for Australia and not the whole world Undecided)

p.s. This thread needs to be updated more often because in the past 7 months there been TONNES of good aircraft and scenery released that deserves a mention in thread.)

Wasn't that post supposed to contain only the BEST addons for FS9 ?
Some people mentionned aircrafts that don't even have a VC...exterior model is not everything  Roll Eyes

For me, Dino Cattanero's Tomcat, or Kirk Olsson F-1 are NOT must-have aircrafts. There are excellent looking, with good dynamics, but that's all. Instrumentation sucks in the VC, nothing is clickable. This is not the BEST you can get as freeware.

Let's be clear, I love those models and I fly them very often, but again, this is not the BEST ! Wink

Military:
... Kirk Olssons birds... any of 'em, doesn't matter cause the're all FAB (****ing Absolutely Beautiful)...

Helicopter:
GMAX Boeing Chinook v1.1 by Mark Adams & Tom Woods (Helicopter section here, page 13)...

Cilvil Jet:
Dreamwings version 3 Embraer Erj 170... Pure class.!.

  Payware:
  Vulcan by Just Flight
  Real Air Spitty
  AlphaSim Wesland Lynx

All this talk about favourites make me wanna quit work NOW and go home to fly them...

But its all down to peoples personal opinions about what people like e.g. I don't like big passenger jets but others love them. You could argue about that all day and nobody would win since its their own opinion.

P.s. Daube, post some of your favourites  Wink

pps. Si_Combat that chinook is very good but the vc isnt very clickable (if I remember right)  Sad

I don't really agree with that. the quality of an addon is not linked to the fact that you love it or not. Quality is quantifiable. For example, I absolutely love the F-1 from Kirk, but I admit it is not top quality, because some functionnalities are missing, like a clickable VC Wink

Another good example: I am not really found of passenger airliners, but the BAC 1-11 and the Hawker-Sidderley Trident from http://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/
are really top-notch. I consider those as being some of the best freewares one could get for FS9.

There are some other examples, which I don't have in mind anymore. Additionnaly, I don't have any computer to play anymore (foreign trip), so I cannot remember exactely the + and - of all the aircrafts I had downloaded Tongue

Aye... you're not far wrong Wealthysoup! The VC in the chinook is poor but that's not how I fly her... I like to fly her from either the Tower View or in Spot View... It looks well, performs well and really sounds good too(despite the size of the sound folder)... I like to "make believe" I'm performing for a crowd  Tongue ...  Embarrassed

Tizz a pity, cause with a bit of time & effort put into a VC the Chinook would be a very special edition to any simmers FS9 Folder... (Provided, of course, you are a fan of Helicopters...)  Wink

Remember, not everyone uses the VC that much, and so may not rate an aircraft on the functionality of it, or whether it has clear, concise gauges. Some aircraft can be the BEST looking aircraft, and therefore do qualify as the best aircraft in some form or another.

Best Looking does not mean best aircraft.
Just because you don't use a functionnality doesn't mean this functionnality is useless, and a addon that has this functionnality is BETTER than an addon that doesn't have it.
You are confusing GOOD and BEST. Here, we try to list the best, not the good Wink

A lot of these I'm pretty sure were mentioned, but:
Definetely the F/A-18's made by Daisuke Yamamoto as well as any other of his planes
The DSB T-45C Goshawk (A must for any flight simmer)
The Stratojet Merlin, Albatross, Excalibur, and Chronos, all by Eugene Heyart
The Tu-144 Holidayzone package
The F-5C (Cannot find who it was by)

All of these are musts for any simmer and are available here (except for Heyart's Chronos, available on AVSim)
There are so many more out there as well, here are jsut a few.

I'm sorry, just got the link from another thread, I;m kinda new here...

I neglected to mention the best ground vehicle you could ever get that I could find anywhere, and it's by Mitsuya Hamaguchi.  It's the Mercedez-Benz Uminog.  Highly recommended, got it from his/her actual site (sorry I don't know if Mitsuya is a guy or girl's name).  Search google, their nickname is hama, and the site is entirely japenese.  Follow the pics.  It is a must get.  Higly detailed everything, including a DVC and operating windows.  There is a great need for great automobiles on FS.
http://f1.aaa.livedoor.jp/~rjnnhama/craft.htm
Here's the link.  the Umalog is a must.

My favorites:
Samdim Tu-114, hands down funnest yet most realistic Cold War era airliner for FS9 (anything Samdim is good)

HJG 707s, also extroardinarily fun and realistic despite the lack of a VC

Hovercontrol Bell 412, best heliciopter built for FS9

Glacier Bay scenery found here: http://www.simviation.com/fs2004scenery102.htm funnest and most realistic scenery I have found yet.

Golden Hawaii scenery and planes by Bill and Lynn Lyons. Also very fun.

Grumman Goose package found here: http://www.simviation.com/fs2004props80.htm definitely one of the best modeled plane and effects I have found yet, also some cool flights.

Stearman Kaydet and Eagle Field package

Stearman Model 75 Duster and Sprayer, found here: http://www.simviation.com/fs2004vintage49.htm Best modeled aircraft I have ever seen, though it runs quite slow due to the high detail. The engine will even predetonate if run at full throttle for over 5 minutes.

Area 51 pack found here http://www.simviation.com/fs2004scenery93.htm The most accurate and complete scenery for the site and the related airports that I have seen.

Lionheart creations aircraft are also very fun, although not usually realistic at all. I must admit that I like the Dauntless concept though, very sleek.

Also, any if the kneeboard web browser add-ons are great, as well as a few of the music ones (I still prefer just using iTunes though).

Also Also, The new Cessna 150 (Can't find the link again, pretty sure its not here) is absolutely awesome, and doesn't kill the framerates. It has some old school navigation features that I believe should be compiled into a package for any plane.

The F-5s and F-20 packs located here: http://www.simviation.com/fs2004military72.htm Collect them all! Though they have a lack of range, navigation, and/or autopilot, they are by far the funnest jets I have flown (other than hovering an F-14, but that would count as a rocket, not a jet, right?)

Anyways, that's just a sampling of my favorite aircraft and sceneries for FS9 (I have over 300 aircraft, all of which are at least pretty good), a full list would be too long to read, let alone to spend the time writing on an old thread that will probably die again within the week. Anyways, I'm sure some of these are already on here, but they deserve reiterating anyways.

Normally I do not go to the Far East: but with the exception of HK- Thamas Wong.

However, so many mentioned BACOLD I had to have a peep! Good one, lots of activity of the human race, great stuff, I enjoy it and it will now stay put.

I like the NAMC YS-11 by Esa Kaihlanen, amongst the hundreds of other planes that I love from this site, I just happened to download it recently and like any kid with a new toy, I play with it the most right now, so it has my number one vote right now.  I love the sound and it has a nice VC, looks terrific and has that realism factor (I keep blowing my engines on take off, gotta remember not to mash the throttle)

One of my favorites is the latest version of the Thomas Nilsson/Bookmark Digital Graphics J-35 Draken package.
The panel and VC is extremely realistic and so is the fully functional   PN-59 Nav system. It includes a "last state" cfg. file and several versions of the Draken.
