Hi Lads... Grin...!

Here's a little puzzle for you...!

Ever since I added Windows XP, (in addition to my existing Win '98SE), to my computer, every time I dial-up, a VERY ANNOYING site called DerBiz, insists on installing itself in my Windows System Directory, placing its Icon on my desktop, and over-riding my default ISP in my Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet options > General > Home Page: http://www.freeserve.co.uk.

Even if I delete all reference to it, including the file in my Windows Directory, next time I dial-up there it is again...!
It overrides ALL my Connection Settings and Preferences in Windows XP.
(Note: My Privacy and Security settings are set to "Normal".

Here is an example where it appears*...>>

...

How can I stop this arse program from taking over my computer without popping round to their bloody place and setting alight to it...?
Also...this site contains a lot of "Adult" material....not good for the Grandchildren..!!

Cheers all...!

Paul The Very Annoyed.

It is interesting to notice that I get more pop-ups in Win XP than ever I do in Win '98SE, even tho' I have installed a "Pop-Up Blocker" to my WIN XP IE tool bar.

If you REALLY want to browse...take care...(Removed the link!)

Take a box of matches and a can of petrol with you...Please...Just for me...LOL... Grin...!
All helpful suggestions very welcome....including arson... Wink...!

*This screen-shot was taken with Win '98SE, but a similar option appears in Win XP.. Wink...!

I have no knowledge of WinXP but that would also be my first suggestion. Sounds like Spyware to me. I think XP has its own Firewall but I never go online without ZoneAlarm running. I've heard about something called Malware but have no idea what that is.

Right - it's usually considered a breach of etiquette to post a live link to a suspected spyware site.

Tee-Hee, Jared... Grin...!
I'm desperately trying to get rid of the bleedin' site, not browse it...LOL...!

Thanks for all your suggestions, Lads.
I'll try them all out.... 8)...!
Interestingly, I have read that some free Adaware-type programs actually install spyware on your system... Roll Eyes... Cry...!!

Funny thing is, I never had/get these sort of problems using IE and Win '98SE.... Shocked...!
So I mostly boot-up to Win XP just for the novelty of the colourful Icons at the mo'...and use Win '98SE for doin' serious "stuff".... Wink... Grin...!
LOL...!
I've got Mozilla on both systems, but they run much too slowly using dial-up... so it's mainly IE browsers on both... Wink...!
Also got Zonealarm and Norton running on both systems.

I sometimes think that the annoying toe-rags have left us '98 users alone and are homing in on XP users... Wink...!

Cheers again Lads, I'll let you know how I get on... Grin...!
Many thanks...

Paul The Confused.

May have to un-install Win XP and re-install it again... Cry...!

I have two PCs, a desktop and a laptop.

The desktop has Norton antivirus, and had a long period using IE and MSN, and had a spyware problem until MS Anti-Spyware Beta came out and still does occasionally (but MS AS Beta stops it in its track)...

The laptop has Norton Antivirus and Internet Security as well as MS Anti-spyware beta, and I've nearly exclusively used Opera, and has never had a problem (touchwood)...

My conclusion is that Norton Internet Security does a hell of a lot of good for your pc as far as spyware is concerned...

This looks like a nasty little bugger.  I Googled it and found that quite a few people are infected but no one seems to really know how to get rid of it, even the major antivirus manufacturers.

The best advice I could find was here http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?s=31eb85914625b48990200b1ce8751425&showt...

boot into safe mode and do the same things you did before.  If you are comfortable editing your registry you will probably need to do that, too.

If it is not intolerable keep Googling it.  One of the AV firms should have a fix soon.

Hi Jim...!
One of my lads came round to have a look at it...
He also went to Google, like you, and as you say, it's a nasty buggar.

My hard drive is partitioned into 3 parts, with Win XP installed on the first 5Gb Partition.
I reckon it may be easier to Un-install??/Delete Windows XP from the partition and re-install it again.
The alternatives of fiddling about in the Registry look extremely complicated/dangerous, judging by the remarks in Google...!

Apparently, there are many/most Sites around which put spyware on your computer and result in all these annoying pop-ups and registry corruptions.

But this DerBiz one is the absolute pits... Angry...!

Cheers all... Grin...!

Paul.

Fozzer, I honestly believe you have had a or some trojans installed. Currently there are many running around out there that install malware.

I posted in the "What do you use for protections" thread.

eAccelleration's Stop Sign was the only one that found those nasty buggers and fixed them all. Did this with their free scan and 30 day trial version.

Spybot, Ad Aware, AVG..........all updated didn't find a thing.

I won't knock them though, they served me well for a long time.
