A few more items have been made for the cockpit, these include the winscreen De-icing control.

And the front windscreen assembly and glazing.

Don't worry Dave I think I've found a 66 with a Rotol hub, just waiting to hear back from a person with this...

Does this mean I don't have to "beef up" my wheelchair to "borrow" the one from Hendon? Grin

It may not ever fly, but it sure isn't just a simulator. It'll be a flightsim experience!
Forgive me for being lazy and not going back over old posts, but as an A/V guy I'm very curious about the display you intend to use with this thing... or have you had time to figure that out yet? Wink
Surely you're not just going to put a monitor  in front of it...?!

As yet, no decision has been made regarding the display, but you are correct , there will be no monitor stuck on the front. A projection system seems to be the most likely. I have one or two more hours on the build, then the force feed back system to install, so the visual system will be the last part of the project.

Dave,

For your display I am envisioning sort of a white geodesic dome made out of projection screen material sitting with the "aircraft" in the center.  It'd have a seamless door in the rear at the 6 so that you can enter the holodeck.... err ... room.  About 6 XVGA projectors would cover the whole expanse of the sky around the craft.   It'd also be sitting on a thick milky polycarbonate floor that was a rear projection screen so that the ground was simulated also.

Get working on that, would ya"?   Wink

best,

......................john

PS:  rottydaddy....... go back over the WHOLE series of posts...... it'll be worth it.

Hello John,
Yeah i wish, I think if i sell the cockpit section after it's completed, i may just have enough money to get that system built  Grin.
I do have a very understanding wife, but even that lady has limits  Smiley.

Keep those ideas coming though  Grin.

Dave,

OK.... how about some of the new flexible film lcd screens?  Cover the entire canopy with them so that you have a totally enclosed "screen".  That would work.... but it'd take a Cray to keep up with the visual data, I'd bet.   Grin

best,

...................john

PS:  My wife is very understanding too...... as you can see from MY project  Wink.

The dome idea is sound (that's how some big-time sims are done; the co. I worked for did a small one for a defense contractor awhile back but I didn't work on it), but might require multiple projectors, especially if you want multiple views. Then you get into meshing the images- a real headache, even on a flat surface.
However,if you're limited to one projector there are LCD projectors out now with remarkably good distortion correction built-in; they'll project on a multiplanar, concave or convex surface- even a dome- with virtually no distortion. Saw a demo of a new NEC unit last year- they centered the image in the corner where walls and ceiling meet, and it looked flat! It was amazing!! This one was also a DLP unit... gorgeous image quality. And of course, rather pricey. Can't quote prices offhand, but NEC makes a pretty wide range of units- check their website and/or contact them.
But for a less budget-busting solution, I'd recommend a single-projector RP setup, with a wide screen with just a little curve to it. You wouldn't really be able to look off the wingtip or check your six properly, but maybe as a compromise you could go with a multiple-output card and use smaller monitors or cheaper projectors for the side views.
As for flexible LCDs... haven't worked with them, but they've got to be mega-expensive and probably still buggy as hell. Interesting idea though...

As lame as this sounds, why don't you coat the dome in some sort of film (like taht stuff they use for screening movies), then hang a digital projector from the roof, (pointing down) and let it project the images onto the dome?
P.S This may work well or fail completly.

A small project upadate on the Spitfire build. While waiting for some technical information on thermo forming poloycarbonate sheet, i made the cockpit door catch and operating lever. This has no been completed, and with the technical info now at hand i can try forming the small top glazing panel to complete the front windscreen. Any lessons learned while making this will come in very handy when it comes to forming the canopy.

After getting side tracked by helping out on a couple of other projects, and trying to keep the Spitfire cockpit build moving forward, didn't leave any time for posting any updates.
The few parts i have managed to get on with include the raiator flap control lever, tank jettison lever and making a start on a replica Nose up/Down indicator.

Linked images "unhooked"  -JB

My humble apologies Ozzy for the delay in replies sir, think you must have had me posted as M.I.A   Grin
