Any help?
my internal ESS ES56T-PI data fax modem, on Net
dial-up  the line cuts out every few seconds and as I redial the ON period gets progressively longer up to 10 to 15 minutes and sometimes 45mnts. Real back pain.

Just discovered that our other slower (500mhz) PC with an old external USRobodics 28800 - 33600 modem, on same tel- line, never fails and stays on for ever.

The drivers are what I can get now from the net.

Do I have to change my ESS modem ?
Thank you all

Sounds like something interfering ....... I'll say the predictable, have you checked for Adware, Spyware, Viruses and Rogue dialers.
How much activity is there over the modem ...... it may be that if there is enough inactivity over a period then it dissconnects.

Yes, check for auto dialers/trojans.

Make sure your modem settings aren't set to minimal time of inactivity before disconnect. Doubt it, but should be checked to eliminate.

Since other machine is fine with staying connected, then it isn't an ISP issue but a modem issue. Assuming you have looked around for updated drivers, there are still some things we can try before trashing that modem and getting a better one. If you need to get one, I recommend a Hayes modem.

Here are some things you can try........

Open up your modem settings and set your Max. Port Speed to 115200. Yes, set it there.

Now look for your "Extra Initialization Commands". In here, type S11=50. (No period in there at end) Hit OK and exit out of modem settings. Reboot and then connect up. See if this doesn't help. It won't hurt and if you have a problem, just go back and remove entry. This gives MOST modems the command to stay connected for up to 5 sec. even if the line is dropped for some reason.

If this doesn't help, or even if it does, I strongly recommend to any dial up, DSL, Cable or even T1 user to download and use CableNut. Free program and has tweaked settings for connections. Just run the "Adjuster", go to FILE/Costum Settings and look in the css folder. Select the custom setting for the type connection and OS you have. Hit the "Save to registry" and VOILA!! Reboot and you are set. CableNut automatically backs up registry so you can run the adjuster and reset to DEFAULT if you need to. YOU WON'T NEED TO THOUGH!!  Grin

Get it here: http://www.cablenut.com

Good luck and hope this helped you out.

What I forgot to say is that I connected the old USRobotics on my 1500mgz PC and it works without interraptions for hrs.

Eno, I use AVG and Mcfee freebees. and how do I check "How much activity is there over the modem" ?

Fireman, it was always on 115200.
Just done the "S11=50" bit.
Downloaded Udjuster, & used the 2000, and I am now rebooted and dialed up with the Internal ESS.
Seems to hold on now I am modifying this thread, and I will report later if you corrected my fault.  Thnx  again.

Above modem trouble so far solved, unless it's a coincidence in the week-end.

BUT, may be a coincidence again, all my four ISP Connections in cntrl panel "Internet options" have been lost, and had to reinsert them. Also one English web site appeared in some Cyrillic/Greek language.

Please explain, what you asked me to do in the "css folder" of Adjuster, is it the same as "S11=50" bit I did manually?               see you

The initialization string, S11=50 is different than using the custom tweak provided by Cablenut.

When you run the adjuster, just make sure you select the profile for your type connection and OS. Then hit save to registry.

The string I gave you will still be there if you already put it in.

Hi Fireman,
do you think this S11=50 and the Adjuster business could have messed up my PC.

Even lost my "ulindel" identity and got in with this new "Luke" one.

Please see my post on Reinstalling WinXP

No, Cablenut nor the Init. string I gave you had anything to do with the problem you encountered.

My best guess is that you either had a massive system failure and/or a very nasty cold (VIRUS!!!!!).

There are many running around out there that will wipe XP clean if you contract one of em.

How old is your system? Possibly a hard drive going bad........making any NEW noises lately?

Sorry about the problems you have had.....but it wasn't Cablenut or the string entries.

Thnx again,
so I reactivated both on my reinstallation and think might be an impruvement.

HD about 18 months with no problems. No virus detected, and the rest of the system booted OK in
win98. Only WXP failed with the error I mentioned.

I have to use 1027x768 to get fs9 to work, and that with "safe mode fs9.exe" that kindly fs9 dished out because of my very poor grfx card.
Now this causes everything on desktop to show up very small.
I managed to enlarge most things via "appearance" except for the text within Win-explorer, this Simvtn window and all others.  How can I increase it, like I do in word by using 150%.           see you

PS.    AOL dial cut-out 3 times, woops now  4rth, while writing this in last 5mnts

AOL, well there's your problem as far as dropping your connection. I wouldn't have AOL if THEY paid me!!!!

Just my opinion but there are plenty of better and cheaper ISPs out there to have to put up with AOL's tricks.

As far as your XP problems, you got me. When I reformatted and reinstalled XP, a Dell tech helped me and all works fine. That was some time ago. Perhaps one of the more tech. savy people here will jump in and answer those questions for you.

Good luck..................and check around for a different ISP. REALLY!!  Grin

All that now is behind me, xp would not reinstall when it unexpicably failed, when I reformated its partition it installed fine.

And yet the old external 2800-3360 modem hooked on my PC is faster and stays for ever even on AOL.

It looks like have to buy another modem.

As the AOL is concerned I am stuck with a free offer for a while. My Onetel and Wanadoo cost 2.5 pence pm.

Can anybody help with the small print I get now?
