I’ve got Nero5 and a Sony 52X CD/RW DVD drive. According to Nero all I can burn with is an Image Recorder, virtual device. I want to get my real drive recognised to burn an ISO data disc. When I do it with this image recorder it goes along at 40,000kbps and says done. The CD is unmarked and I get an effing image file on my disc!! This is driving me stir-fry crazy! In this PC the drive (LG 48X) and Image recorder is FINE! How can I add my drive? Anyone? Please? WTF is wrong??
Dan

EDIT - The disc (Sony) that I'm using says max 48X. Will it matter or can mty drive adapt to it? Cos if it can't i need a new box of CD's! Shocked

Dan,
I do not understand the technical terms you used, but for 2 - 3 yrs I have been backingup my 40 and 80gig HDs with it.  (my old CD-RRW says LG 24x10x40)

If that is what you are trying to do here it is:-

In "Nero Burnin Rom" go file, and "Burn HD", choose all the HD or a partition to backup and after 9 CDs burned, its done.

And can restore all or any partition.

Now for backing up my "Files" I use Roxio's "Direct CD Format" utily to format a CD and then drag & drop in it my files. This is not very reliable or constant for some reason, and if anybody knows of a way to backup my files with Nero, plesae tell me.

If this is not what you are trying to achieve, sorry I bored you.

The problem with your Nero 5 software is that it simply won't recognise the newer drive you have. Get rid of it (N5), it's way too old and replace it with a newer version that will recognise your drive.

I'm sorry Dan but that is the only solution. Maybe you could contact the people who sold you the drive and see if they forgot to give you the burning software. If not, I suggest looking on the Nero Website for a workable (demo?) version.

Before doing that, you might want to check if you have the latest Nero 5.5.x version.
The latest one is 5.5.10.56.
The latest updates to the 5.5 family basically consisted in support of newer burners so maybe you'll be lucky.

Yeah, the drive will automatically run at max speed, which is 48x for you.

Hello Dan ,

I probably know less about this than anybody so may not be of any help .  I purchased a MadDog CD burner which came with Nero Version 5.5.10  .  I used it with no problem when I had Windows 98 .  I updated to a newer PC and XP and couldn't figure out how to get it to work .  I just stumble onto a setting that solved the problem for me .  I went to my Nero Burning Icon and then got to Recorder .  It showed two selections on mine :
Image Recorder ( have no idea what that is ? )
ARTEC WRR-52x

I changed from the Image Recorder to the other selection and all has worked perfectly .

Jamie,

It wasn't a problem with WinXP recognising your drive, but probably Nero setting a default configuration when you changed op sys.

The problem Dan had was that his burner did not show up on Nero's internal list of supported drives, because his drive wasn't around when the software was written.

When Dan went to that tab in Nero, his drive, unlike your's, wasn't in the list. ( Yes, your MadDog is actually an ARTEC WRR-52x ).

If Nero doesn't detect a supported drive, it defaults to it's internal image recorder. The image recorder is a virtual (software) drive built into Nero software. It acts like a burner but saves the "disk" to a file on your hard drive, usually as an .iso image file.

.iso image files can then be burnt onto CD's, re-creating the original or intended disk, using Nero or other burning software that supports the ISO image format.

I'm not exactly sure what ISO format is, except that it will fairly accurately reproduce a copied disk, (complete and bootable if it was originally a bootable system disk).

ISO images of software can be downloaded from the internet and saved to your hard disk, where you can later burn them onto a CD and use them as if the disk was original.

Be aware that copyright laws prohibit the transfer of some software in this way, and that burning ISO images onto disk may be illegal.

HI Congo ,

Thanks for taking the time to explain some of that stuff . I was hoping there might be a simple answer to his problem like there was to mine .
I only use that ISO thing to back up my personal stuff like planes , screenshots , etc.

Thanks again ,

Jamie
