Recently decided to try to shoot a few pics from my 4th-floor living room windows; my bldg. is just NW of KEWR, and many aircraft can be seen passing by. These were taken on 2 consecutive days...
I used my old Canon 35mm SLR with an equally old Lentar 400mm 1:6:3 telephoto, on a tripod. Unfortunately, all the huge windows are made with 1/2" thick plexiglass and can't be opened (original ones rotted away ages ago), so there are some flaws visible. I might try to fix 'em later, but ... When it gets warmer maybe I'll open a window in my room (also faces east) and get some cleaner shots. But some of these are nice, with the sunset-lit clouds and all. Someday I hope to catch an elusive 747; they tend to climb out much shallower, making for some awesome pictures. One was roaring off Rwy 04 as I got home, which inspired me to take these photos, but of course it was the last of the day (Virgin to London, I think).
I'm not much of an airliner guy (they all look the same to me), so excuse my errors in identification, and feel free to help me here...
First is a Continental 737(?) landing on 22 (right, I think). The skylines of Jersey City and NYC can be seen below....

A Continental 777 (?) departing Rwy 04 Left ....

This one is tough; def. Continental, but I dunno...
the type. Embraer? Fokker? DC9? Anyway,
they're on final for 29, with the Verrazano
Narrows Bridge visible beyond.

United 767(?) off Rwy 04......

Continental 767(?), Rwy 29 again....

...
Another big Continental, farther out on approach for 29. That's the Pulaski Skyway below; connects Newark and the NJ Turnpike
to the Holland Tunnel.

A Continental Boeing w/ a very odd but
nice paint job...
...

Smiley!!

Very nice...aircraft corrections for you (if you are interested)...

pic 2:  757
pic 3: embraer (145-135)
pic 5: 777
pic 7: that is the Peter MAX B777..quite a rare aircraft (being that it is Peter Max)

Fantastic shots..whenever I go to the city throught the Holland tunnel you drive right under the runway...I've gotten to have a few great shots from Newerk...also driving donw the highway next to the runway with my brohter and me trying to race a A340....we lost

Thanks for the corrections. And now that you mention it, I can easily see that that's a Max design... that makes up for missing the Virgin 747 (but I'll get a picture of it yet!!)

Thanks craig- yeah, I think some of these might be nice if I can clean them up. As far as flying to Gatwick to take pictures, let's say I don't want it that bad, cheap ticket or no. Easier and more pleasant to do it from my living room...

Thanks for looking. When the warm weather comes and I can open one of my bedroom windows, i should get some better ones (might get a longer lens, too).
When you say you live "at their main hub" do you mean close to the airport?

I'm not much of an airliner guy either. To be honest I can't tell which airlines are which are these days. I'm not familar with airport ID numbers but I think KEWR is Newark. If I remember correctly, Virgin Atlantic operate their regular London - NYC service out of Heathrow to JFK. Orlando & Vegas flights are operated from Gatwick.

PS. Although my niece works for Virgin I can't say it's my favourite airline. I've only tried it once & was very disappointed. The same goes for Continental, although this was some years ago & it could have improved.

I checked their website- there are a few  in and out of Newark every weekend. Pretty sure the one I saw was  a Virgin 747. What a shot that would've made (climbing out very shallow compared to the others) - but of course it was long gone by the time I got upstairs...
May not be the best airline, but I love that paintjob- especially the pinup girl on the nose!

Pity they put up a bloomin' great security fence around Gatwick or I could have got you some spectacular shots. Even so, I might pop up there now it's getting warmer & see what I can do for the airliner freaks.

Great Rotty, I get a lot of aircraft directly over my house but I've just realised it's actually probably better having them at that vantage point.  Great pics 8)

Yes fairly close not like people who live on the complete opposite side of town (if you aren't aware Houston is one of the largest cities in the U.S.)
