Not sure they can remove it. I assume the whole nose section was slightly different on the various models.

I think for the films they cut up and changed a lot of the planes. Probably wouldnt be too hard to fit a panel over the hole where the turret is, and of course they had to change the front cabin windows to gun placements as well.

Looks fairly easy - remove the turret, take of the fairing and fit a panel in place...

I don't think she had a chin turret when she made Memphis Belle. I think it was fitted after. If you ever watched the TV show We'll meet again, Sally B had no turret when she made that show, the space was blanked off. She was also in a polished metal finish in those days.

Thats always possible, the amount of films that shes been in would mean shes probably had more changes than any other plane around.

She had it in 1985 though, 4 years before the filming of "Memphis Belle"

and earlier for that matter...

I took a close-up of Sally B's nose at the Farnborough 1996 show. Can't remember if she had the chin turret then. I shall look out the photo & scan it when I have a moment.

She's had it since the making of the 'Belle (it was taken off for the Belle and subsequently refiited...). I can confirm it was definately there because at Biggin Hill that year I had to ask someone to stop their child hanging from the guns...
However it wasn't fitted any turrets when she was with IGN in France. From memory, and without looking it up, they were re-fitted in the late seventies (post '77) or in the very early eighties (before '83 as my previous post shows). By chance I happen to have the August 1977 copy of Aircraft Illustrated in front of me, which has an interesting pic of Sally B (turretless, being flown by Don Bullock - known mainly for crashing the A-26 in the valley at Biggin Hill in '80 or '81) in formation with a P-51D, brought over from the US especially for the Duxford Show that year...

You're quite correct - as usual.

I'm sure we could drag it out a bit longer if you wish.
Seriously, just trying to get at the facts. I find all this very interesting & as usual I've learned something I didn't know. Charlie & Hawker Tempest know pretty much all there is to know about these old warbirds between them so take no notice of me. If we don't know, Felix will come in & sort it out.
At least it's kept this thread alive & more people have seen your photos because of it. Now, I think you mentioned posting some more. Let's be having 'em.
