Embarrassedcaptjim,

hello fellow simmers.  hope all had a great holiday.  lets start off with a couple of problems that just cropped up for me.  one, I have just started having loading difficulties with 2002.  I get through the first two disks ok, but about halfway through the third disk the system stalls.  I have to push the restard button on the tower.  I have tried several times and the same thing happend.  it dosen't stall at the same place everytime.  any suggestions???  I believe that this same problem has been addressed before in the forum, but I dont' recall where.  the second problem is that in some instances, usually flights over 300km, get within 15 to 20 klicks from the airport and the system locks up.  the only way out is to restart the computer.  talk about frustrating...  can anyone out there help this struggling simmer????

thanks, captjim

Hi Jim. Not sure I understand your questions. If I'm reading this right you're having problems installing FS2002 so how can you have problems actually using it? ???

In my experience, lock-up problems when installing the later M$ sims are caused by applications running in background. Anti-virus software is a known cause of this problem. I suggest disabling all unneccessary background applications (especially anti-virus software & scheduled tasks) before attempting to install FS2000, FS2002, FS9 or CFS3.

This might also explain lockups while using the sim.

Curiouser and curiouser.... Roll Eyes...!

If you are having difficulties with loading, (installing?), FS 2002 from the disks, how come you are having problems with "flyng" using FS 2002... 8)...!
If you can't install it, how do you manage to fly it...?

Cheers....!

Paul.

P.S. ..sorry Doug....Two minds, but with a single thought... Wink.... Grin....!

Grincaptjim,

ok ok so I got my horse behind the cart.  actually what I meant was that when I have been successful in loading the program, it did lock up when approaching the airport, then after re-starting the computer the loading froze up.  Hagar, good to hear from you again.  I figured that I could rely on you to respond.  Hope this clears up exactly what I meant.  thanks again, captjim

Hi Jim. I'm still not clear on this. You mentioned getting through the first two disks OK so I assumed you were having problems installing FS2002. Quote:

Once FS2002 is installed it should run without a CD in the drive.

hagar lets try it once more.  I am attempting to load fs2002 standard edition.  as you know, while your program is loading there is a line at the bottom of the screen that indicates the percentage i.e. 1-100%.  well my program stops at 13% or 53% etc.  I do not keep a disk in the drive when I fly.  make sense??? captjim

??? By load, do you mean install FS2002 or run it? Once it's installed you don't need the disks any more. All mine are sitting happily on the shelf gathering dust. They will stay there until I need to reinstall for some reason.

If you're having problems installing it try disabling all those background applications I mentioned first. At the very least disable your anti-virus software.

Sorry to "but in" but ... my experience has been that you CHOOSE whether to install  on the hard drive in the initial stages of the 2002 operation. If you choose otherwise you do need the disc in place to fly

Quite correct papa-metro. From what captjim said earlier I think he used the default Typical install option which doesn't need the CD in the drive to run.

Jim, if you're reading this I suspect you're having problems reinstalling FS2002. Please tell me if my suggestions worked. I use a little utility named EnditAll to safely shut down unnecessary background application before installing any large program like the later M$ sims. http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/ You will still need to manually shut down your anti-virus software. If the FS2002 setup program automatically reboots your PC during install make sure to do it all again before continuing.

Undecidedcaptjim,

please execuse the over-simplifaction approach to this situtation.  1.  I have 2004 (fs9) loaded and everything is OK.  This program does require the #3 disk to be in the computer to work.  (I know. I's preaching to the choir here).  now I also have fs 2002 (basic & pro edition).  In the past I never had to keep any od the disks in the machine to make it fly.  the current problen is that I uninstalled fs2002 and wanted to re-install it.  this is where the problem arose.  the first two disks loaded ok, however at about 53% or so the system stops loading.  I have tried both the basic & the por editions, with the same results.  By the way I do not try and load both the basic & pro edition together.  I hope this has made it a little clearer, captjim.

Hi Jim. That's a little clearer now. Wink
I suggest you uninstall FS2002 & start again. Use the Uninstall option on CD-1. This might not be necessary if it didn't install properly but try it anyway. Then delete the FS2002 directory folder from your HD. When you've done that, reinsert the CD & do a fresh install. This time, please disable any anti-virus software beforehand.

As you seem to have both versions I suggest installing the Pro ediition - providing you have enough free space on your HD.

Good luck. Wink

Undecidedcaptjim,

Hagar,  did everything you suggested, however this time it got as far as 83% on the 3rd disk and then it just quit.  must be a gremlin in the works somewhere.

Well, at least that's an improvement. This is the stage when those big scenery CAB files are extracted from the CD. This uses a lot of virtual memory & might take a while when nothing appears to be happening. I can only suggest trying the same thing again. Don't exit setup unless you're certain it's locked up.  If the program automatically reboots your system during the install remember to quit those background applications again before continuing.
