I remember reading something about them finding him but never anything else. So they really raised him and his boat then?

On Thursday 8th March 2001 Bluebird was recovered from Coniston Water where she had lain since the 4th of January 1967.
On Monday 28th May 2001 it was announced that human remains had been recovered from Coniston Water and it was believed they were the remains of Donald Campbell. This was confirmed in August. The funeral took place on Wednesday 12th September in foul wet weather even by Coniston standards.

V.Difficult at the time with the diving kit of the late 60's Andrew. The didn't have the special kit we have nowadays such as the helium/oxygen mix for deep dives, and at that depth even with 2 tanks you'd have about 15mins tops, and nitrogen at that depth becomes a narcotic. Try doing something technically difficult whilst having a couple of fat people sit on you whilst you are drunk...
Basically it wasn't an option at that time, and also many people felt she should be left at the bottom of the lake as a memorial to a brave (if crazy) man...

There's no doubting his bravery. Sadly I think this was the inevitable result of a former hero trying to live up to his reputation without the proper research or resources. There would also have been strong financial motives.
