On this day in 1936 Edward VIII renounced his throne, in exchange he became the Duke of Windsor and got to leap upon the infamous American divorcee Mrs. Simpson (who no disrespect to American ladies was a bit of a moose, my personal favourite American lady is of course Cameron Diaz for the record
).
Proof that love conquers all, as he was the boss of about quarter of the planet at the time

Personally I think we got the best of the deal. With all due respect, his brother was a far better King than he would ever have been.
I wonder how WWII would have turned out (or if it would have taken place at all) had he not abdicated.

An interesting point Doug, George did give magnificent leadership in the darkest days of the Blitz, inspite of his own health problems and gave his all for the country.
Fate is a funny bugger who loads the dice IMHO

Your comment about Mrs. Simpson looking like a moose brings to mind the little known "Yoko Ono Syndrome", or, why could a man who could any woman pick a skank?

Who can say? How many times have you seen the most oddly-matched couple & wondered how they got together & what on earth one sees in the other? From all accounts, Edward was a weak man & easily led. The "Playboy Prince" who much preferred enjoying himself to attending to matters of state. (At least one of the present Royal Family springs to mind.
) Despite this, or maybe because of it, Edward was very popular with the ordinary working people for some unknown reason. Mrs Simpson was apparently a striking woman with a strong personality. Maybe they suited each other perfectly.

Maybe it really is a case of opposites attract, afterall I'm married to a cute, loving, wonderful and kind person, whilst I'm of course a horrible git (part of the criteria for being a teacher)

Fortunately my wife isn't into FS in the way I am, it took me a year to convince her that Binky should go ahead
Oh and her boobs aren't the size of watermelons!
