While I have the album open here's a few shots I took at Old Rhinebeck airfield in upper NY state during my last trip to the US. According to my passport this was in June 1996. The wind was far too strong to fly the WWI types safely but we were still treated to a good show. The sound of those old rotary engines was music to my ears. It was an excellent way to spend the last day of a wonderful holiday.
The infamous Black Baron with his machine.
Old Rhinebeck is the US equivialent of Old Warden in the UK.

If you're interested in real aeroplanes & in the area during the summer months I urge you to visit.

Great shots Doug, but err #4 isn't perchance sponsored by a famous NY taxi company?
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

Nice pics!
I was fortunate to have actualy met Cole Palen back in the mid 70's when I first went to the Aerodrome.
He was quite a character and showman!
Home airports are KMGJ and KSWF in Orange County, NY&&Stop by and say hello.

Thanks for the comments. These scanned better than I expected & look better than the originals.

Interesting Joe. I heard he was quite a character. I believe I mentioned before that I had the pleasure of meeting Stanley Segalla, the "Flying Farmer". Quite a character too & an excellent airman. I'm kicking myself for not having my photo taken with him when I had the chance.

Here's a pic of Stanly Segalla I took this past september.
Although it apears he is landing (or taking off) he is actually stationary, piveting 360 degrees on the mains with the tail high off the ground.
He does do some amazing things with his Cub!

Thanks for the photo Joe. Strangely enough I have an almost identical one taken 8 years before yours.

Absolutely.
He must be getting on in years now & long may he continue doing it.

Bob Hoover must've had a claim to that (I think he may have retired now...), and I'm sure some of the WW2 vets who still fly Warbirds may still have a claim on that...

I remember Bob Hoover having problems with the authorities some time ago. He was banned from display flying for a while but I think he might have sorted them out. Without checking I'm not sure how old he would be now.
The authorities don't encourage display or professional pilots over a certain age. My old boss Cecil Pashley was forced to give up instructing despite passing his medicals with flying colours. This was something he'd been doing all his life & they took that away from him. He passed away about 1 year afterwards so you could say the authorities were right to take his license. I always suspected he died of a broken heart.
PS. I don't know how recent this is.
