I just found out about a game called Train Simulator from Microsoft. Maybe its just me, but dosnt that sound like the most boring thing ever? I mean seriously, how could that be fun? To each his own I guess.

P.S. to anyone who likes trains, no offense intended.

It's not bad really, but then again I always liked trains as well as aircraft, of course it is not nearly as cool as flight sims, but you do have to stick to schedules and obey speed limits and such, I always thought it would be nice if the flight sims had a commercial or airline pilot mode where you had to stick to a flight plan and schedule, maybe that will come it the future.
MS train sim has been out for years, there are tons of add-ons for it, not for everyone I guess.

I've been thinking of getting it, seems like it would be for the ones who like to look at scenery. Crusing throught the mountains and valleys a little closer than allowed by aircraft.
It seems too be a cool sim for just sitting back and relaxing.

Same here, if it can be done in Train Sim why not FS? I'm no programmer but it doesn't seem to be a difficult thing too accomplish, but like I said I'm not a programmer Wink

If you think M$ Train Sim is boring, take a look at http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/languages/us1/

What do computers and air conditioners have in common?...
They both will work perfectly, until you open windows.

I also have played around with the Auran Trainz sim, it wasn't that bad, it's not as simple to operate a train as you may think.

Train Simulator is ok. a good game if you into trains, but its highly unrealistic, just look at the track signals and you'll know (they adopted a genric system which is crappy as hell).

They were going to make a train simulator 2, but MS cancelled it. Wonder why....

Not very popular over here at the moment...
Our train drivers, etc, have all gone on strike on the old "Great Western Railway", in the West of England, so if we were thinking of going somewhere by choo-choo train it looks as though we've got to stop at home for a while...
Cry...!

...so much for trains, real or simulated...
Roll Eyes... Cry...!

LOL...LOL...LOL..!

Cheers all...!

I have both MSTS and Auran Trainz 2004.  MSTS seems to be more geared toward real world operations (despite the generic signaling) and Trainz 2004 seems to have more of a model railroader type flavor to it although realworld terrain and routes can be modeled with the right utilities and a little time.  Now, in MSTS the route editor and world builder are notoriously hard to use, one must be a software type to figure it out.  Trainz world builder is very easy to use and some fantastic scenery can be done although the track detail is somewhat more lacking than MSTS.  Heck, good HO track looks better.  But, it does give somewhat of a Godlike feeling building routes in Trainz.  Also, all the industries are interactive.  Cars get loaded and unloaded.  Logs, trailers, coal, ore, its all interactive and you see it being done. I've read what Auran's future plans are with the software and they intend to split it in 3 different versions.  They intend to creat a "model railroad" sim.  An intermediatary version which will serve as both realworld and model style, and a full-out locomotive simulation which they hope to market to railroads worldwide for engineer training.  It will be interesting to see what they do with it.
