Is there a cheaper way for a student guy to get XP Pro other than to get it from OC UK:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional - OEM      £92.77

Seems a bit steep for an OS, no matter how good it is - especially when I can use '98 for free!!

Well, heres the 'spec' of the PC I had in mind;

"Titan" AMD Athlon 64 3000+      703.83
Hyundai ImageQuest Q770S 17'' Perfectly Flat CRT Monitor      93.94
Microsoft Windows XP Professional - OEM      £92.77
nTech 16W 2.1 Channel Speaker System      £11.69
Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse      £7.64
Logitech Internet Keyboard      £7.52
     £917.39

If anyones interested I can give you the specsd of the Titan... So in that price its quite a sizable amount. Wotcha think?

Paul - I like compilation CD's anyway!! lol...

Hi Dan. Do you actually need WinXP Pro? I assume XP Home is cheaper or they wouldn't have 2 different versions. Unless anyone can give me a good reason I think that's the one I would go for if I ever get my new machine.

XP Pro has some options and features which you don't get with XP Home. If you consider yourself an experienced user, Dan, I strongly suggest getting XP Pro.

Amen! Go for XP PRO!

I knwo too many people with the home version having constant problems! Wink

As for a discounted price...

have you looked at getting it through your school?  My school has an agreement with MS where I as a student pay $10 for XP pro, and $20 for Office 2003..Wink (

(Only one copy per student of course..Wink)

also have you looked at your local pc supply, office supply stores?

We have a store over here called Office Max and they have discounts for students on microsoft software..Wink

If you are building a new comp, then get an OEM versian of it. There much cheaper.

BTW, since you have 98, you can buy an upgrade.

XP pro is definitely worth getting over the home.

I have two computers running XP home and don't have any problems, probably the operators causing the problems.

I've thought about upgrading to XP pro on my main computer, but I really can't justify the outrageous cost, XP Home does everything I need it to do.

Absolutly Pro doesn't offer anything but a bunch more useless resource eating services that most people would never use.
I have been using XP Home with no problems as long as automatic updates are not allowed.
I have experianced more hassle at work where XP Pro is used, and too be honest even in a office enviroment I see no benefit to Pro.
Definately doesn't offer anything that justifies the extra cost, especially for the average user Wink

I agree, for the average user. XP pro has many uses including a lot more custumization ability. I won't get into the specific technical details (unless you want me to) and just say this:
If your an average user and just do the bare essentials like email and internet and some gaming and some simple networking, XP home is for you.

However, XP Pro is the only way to go if you need advanced networking with multiple VPN's as well as computer programing (both high and low level). XP Pro is also good for not so legal activites (i.e. hacking).
