Virtual memory will not increase frame rates.
VM is a small portion of  your hard disc  that windows puts aside for emergency use so to speak.

One of our more technical members should be able to explain it better.

Virtual Memory seems to be all I have left  Smiley

I have found that it does help FS9 by increasing the amount of your page file (virtual memory) you want to have it set to your amount of RAM X 2 + 2

ex. 512 (RAM) X 2 + 2 = 1026

Uncetain why adding the 2 but I tried it after reading a XP quide sometime ago and it increased over all performace of all applications.

Give it a try and post your results.

I think your getting things wrong here, increasing the Virtual Memory or pagefile or swapfile as its known generally just wastes HD space and won't give much of a boost on systems with 512MB or More, on systems with less than 512MB, a pagefile is essential, its effectively what keeps your OS running once your physical RAM is full.  Wink
`
Windows is perfectly capable of organising your Virtual Memory or "pagefile" size so leave it to be ‘system managed’. If you really want to save on pagefile size, and have enough RAM (>512MB recommended) then u can decrease the size of your pagefile. It is generally not advised to totally disable the pagefile, but if you have 1GB of RAM some people say they can disable it with no adverse effects......  Undecided

You can reap a performance advantage if you move the pagefile to a separate partition on a separate physical HD.

To change your pagefile size and location with the default Category Control Panel:

1. Head to Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select Performance and Maintenance
4. Select System
5. Select Advanced Tab
6. Under Performance, select the Settings button
7. Select Advanced Tab
8. Under Virtual Memory, select the Change button
9. Adjust as needed, or select "No paging File," then select the Set button
10. Select the Ok button to apply the settings
11. You must reboot for the changes to take effect

From Fastest to Slowest, these are the configuration you can try:

* No swap file at all. Some software may fail. You also need plenty of memory to do this. Certainly,  more than 512 MB!

* A static swap file on a separate hard drive (and preferably, controller) from Windows and frequently accessed data.

* A dynamic swap file on a separate hard drive (and preferably, controller) from Windows and frequently accessed data.

* A static swap file on a separate partition, but on the same physical hard drive as Windows.

* A dynamic swap file on a separate partition, but on the same physical hard drive as Windows.

* The Default: A dynamic swap file on the same partition and physical hard drive (usually C) as Windows. Typical M$ , the default is also the slowest!  Roll Eyes

Hope this helps.   Smiley

HMMM...

Conflicting stories, but yours does make sense somewhat.

When I increased my page file, I had only 256 MB Ram and noticed a great increase in performance. But I now have a Gig of RAM so I might not need a large page file although it doesn't hurt anything as for I have plenty of room still on the hard drive.

The XP tweaking guide I read from didn't go into as much detail about what the page file really does or how it works.
All I now was I got a big change from increasing it, and was happy, but I guess with a Gig of RAM it isn't doing much of anything now.

My small recommendation is to set the virtmem to 1.5 times your onboard memory.  I have 1GB memory and set my virtmem to 1536MB.

What do computers and air conditioners have in common?...
They both will work perfectly, until you open windows.

Once 1Gb RAM is installed, it's possible to see very small gains by having NO swap file!  That's right... NIL, NONE, ZERO......

Yeh, I know, I thought this sounded crazy too, but tried it anyway....

Wot a hoot, it worked. This forces the O/S to use RAM instead.

But wouldn't you want the O/S to use anything else besides the RAM? Especially while simming?

No, as 1Gb is MORE than enough for both, and because all applications, including FS are also forced to use RAM.

I tried setting my swap to 0 but Win2k doesn't let me. It keeps making a 512MB swap file anyway. So much for getting what I want.

I can completely turn it off on my comp with no adverse effects.

I set it to 512 mb just in case some program does use up all my ram.
