Who uses what with consistant success?  I had been using Star Download for over a year with great results.  Now, ever since the Premium Server went on-line my Star Download hasn't been working.  I have tried everything including un-installing and re-installing it to no avail.  I posted about this in the Broken Links forum and it was flat out denied that anything changed regarding the free server connection but I can't help but wonder when a utility that worked 100% now doesn't work at all.  So, I ask you all who among you uses download managers and which ones are currently working well here at simviation's library? Also, it has to be a free download manager as well.

Thanks in advance for you opinions and recommendations.

I have always used Getright and have had wonderful success. I don't know if there is still a free version or not.

After reading the thread in "broken links" what Pete is trying to explain is that the Star download might be configured to download off multiple files at once too speed up download times. Try to see how your download manager is set up and be certain it isn't set to download from multiple places.
For example in Getright mine is set to allow 2 multiple downloads from a server at a time (FTP and HTTP) I also have it set not to mirror downloads.
I'm thinking yours might be set for more than 2 downloads from a specific server at a time and this is why the error.

This is not the first site to limit downloads reason being some of these managers will allow someone to connect and download hundreds of files at a time. At a major cost to the site owner and cheating others out of a chance to download.

And to keep from getting "Page not available" type errors get rid of the damn IE and get something more reliable such as Firefox or Netscape, I can't understand why so many deal with the crap that is IE???

Okay.  I'll try to re-configure my star download and if I can't get it to work I will look for get right or try DAO again or others.  I want to get netscape back but the stupid auto-installer hasn't been working right for me.  I used to have netscape in fact.  that was my browser and my wife stuck with IE.  I had my own bookmarks and profile and she didn't bother with netscape at all.  Sometimes she screws up IE by unwittingly downloading freeware dumbstuff like screen savers and search utlilities and stuff and we end up with pickybacked malware high jacking out internet til I get rid of it.  Causes me no end of troubles cause when the puter acts up all U hear is GAAAARY!!!!!.  I don't even get paid for it, lol Roll Eyes

I downloaded getright and configured it to very minimum. passive ftp, no mirrors, no segments etc. It isn't working any better than stardwonload does.  I am starting to think that the free ftp server is too smart for any resumable download managers no matter how they are set.  I will try to get netscape installed and see if getright works better with it.  See, its almost a necessity to have resumablility for me, I only have a 56k connection and I can't tie up my PC while downloading larger files and I can't trust not getting my connection dropped. I'm in a rather rural area with a lot of old copper lines. I guess for larger files I will probably end up going to avsim.com.  I wonder, why has avsim been able to avoid going to Premier pay memberships and nobody else managed that???  I am going into the developer forum and urge them to upload to avsim also if they normally wouldn't.  A site is a site.  Why do some developers favor certain libraries over others?

I don't understand the problem I use Getright and have no trouble at all here??? I also have 56K dial-up and still get the same download speeds as before.
I just downloaded a plane to see if maybe something has changed since my last download and it worked fine.

I'm starting to suspect either a problem with IE or your ISP.

Also you wouldn't have happened to have installed a firewall recently have you?

Also check with your ISP at one time in the past my connection software was updated automatically and by doing so changed access to some ports causing various problems such as download trouble, programs not being able to connect etc.

Problem solved.  I installed Getright with the advanced options thinking I was smarter than I am and after a little frusteration I un-installed it and re-installed it with the basic options and set it like you suggested and bingo, worked swell @ the normal 4.5 kbps average I'm used to.  Thanks for the tip Fret.

If my wife trusted me we would have broadband to but she doesn't want a connection that's always on.  I made the mistake one time of going where I shouldn't have gone and she had to find a site she was in and checked history which I hadn't deleted.  The concession was to change the dial-up password to one of her choice and I don't know it and she connects if I ask to go on-line.  She doesn't know I hacked it and I'm real careful when I'm finished but I definatly do NOT go to anywhere like I was when I got in trouble with her.  Learned my lesson there. I'm not going to detail where I was other than it was the sort of site that would naturally make a wife disgusted, upset, insecure, and more than a little jealous.  You can get what I mean I think. Embarrassed
