Nearing completion of my project here, some items have come up that appear to be baffling Cry - everyone here has helped me tremendously with my questions so far, and I thank you for this.  The latest quandary involves animation of control surfaces - namely, the rudders.  The project aircraft has twin tails similar to the F-18, I have managed to get them to operate properly while on the ground but once in the air, the rudders will hardly move at all, e.g., movement is so minimal that you have to zoom in to see the effect.  I have used the c_wheelster command and this works fine in conjunction with the rudders when on the ground, and in an effort to resolve the problem have de-activated c_wheelster, yet the problem remains.  Have also tried changing the part names from rudder_l and rudder_r to rudder.1 and rudder.2 and various other combinations, nothing has worked.  I have also tried adding keyframes for left and right movement, this results in the rudders flickering erratically.  Anyone who might have a clue as to how to resolve this, I would be more than happy to hear about it.

I don't the rudder has anything do with you doing soemthing wrong and its just the way the sim models things. After all would a rudder move out all the way when flying? cos you'd have the wind resistance pushing it back to its neutral postion.

Could be that the movement is limited by the AIR file or the CFG file settings. You can set the rudder maximum deflection by changing the CFG entry under:

[airplane_geometry]

elevator_up_limit= 25.783
elevator_down_limit= 19.996
aileron_up_limit= 15.000
aileron_down_limit= 15.000
rudder_limit= 22.918 ****** this shows a max of +/_23deg*****

Thanks for your assistance, after trying these suggestions nothing seems to want to get the rudders to go when in flight Angry  Anyhow, upon further investigation, it looks like every one of the FS aircraft I have downloaded (save for a CF-18 and CF-105 Arrow) share the same problem, the rudder just doesn't seem to work when in flight, so it's not a huge issue now.  Will keep tinkering with it and post a note if the bugs get worked out.

The proper tags should be rudder_01 and rudder_02.

In the aircraft.cfg, ensure that the rudder deflection is set properly, usually 18-30 degrees.  This is found in the Aircraft Geometry section.  The rudder tags are not to be keyframe animated; FS handles this.

Lastly, ensure that the Yaw Damper is OFF in flight to allow the rudder to move normally (though you typically have it on in cruise phase).

Just found out the cause of the problem here.  The autorudder feature was enabled in the settings > realism settings menu of FS2002.  Unchecking it permitted free rudder movement while in flight, and allows for more realistic feel while flying.  Going to go try some knife-edge passes now.

Cheers - Brian
