It should be pointed out that "an internet connection" is clearly listed on the retail box as a requirement for runnin/playing the game.
Valve is being up front with this.

HL-2 also comes with "C S source" a miltiplayer internet game which obviously needs a net connection!

Piracy was not that much of a problem in the old days when there was no broadband connections or CD burners.
New times call for new measures if we want developers to keep working on PC game.
Would you want to work for 5 years on a program only to have it stolen/pirated when released?

Also. I find it had to believe that the vast majority who has a high end sys and pays $50 for a game does't have an internet connection.  Smiley

You would be surprised... Wink...!
For the likes of you and me, we can probably afford the never-ending cost of an Internet connection....
But...
Over this side of the Pond youngters are often given a cheap, often second-hand computer and a couple of games....
A one-off expense, paid for by Dad... 8)...!

....now if an Internet connection is required to start/play the game, then a continuous expense is involved...Monthly 'phone line rental charges plus Service provider monthly charges.....just to play a protected computer game... Angry...!
...and who is goingto pay for that... Roll Eyes...?

..as the Bank advert says on the 'tele..."There has to be another way..."...!

Cheers ...!

Paul....a rare breed, who can afford the expense...!

P.S.  I would love to know what percentage of the population of this planet actually have access to, and use, the internet.... 8)...!
...and what percentage doesn't... Roll Eyes....!

Out of just the eight households surrounding me, I am the only one with a computer, and use the Internet... Wink....!
Work that out as a percentage... 8)...!

That strengthens my opinion.
I don't have a high end system or broadband, I don't play multiplayer, so I don't mind spending $50 for a good game and as a matter of fact have many that cost more than $50. So whether or not I can afford a high end system or a $50 game, internet access has nothing to do with it.

and as Fozzer stated the continuous expense after the original $50 could mean that in a years time the game could be costing you well into $100 +, especially if your ISP is the type that limits your time on the net per month and then charges per minute.

Now it wouldn't be too bad if you by the game and then go to a site to register it and then they email you key to unlock it, (again you need internet access) they could also install something in the software that would render it useless if you tried to crack it.
They don't need to have you buy it then go to a website and spend who knows how long to download more software just to be able to play it, which could also raise the price dependant on your ISP Wink

Something to think about is how much it cost to put a game on the shelf. It cost a company $10 for a game that includes advertising, packageing, manufacturing etc.
So take that $40 profit into consideration and now all the sudden it really doesn't seem right. I really don't think these software developers are really losing that much money do to piracy Wink Same goes for recording companies, it only cost them $1.25 to put a CD on the self.

Yes, I can understand how some might not have a net connection, etc.

However "HL-2" is only one part of the HL-2 package.

There is  "Counter strike- source" which is an online, multiplayer game.

HL-2 multiplayer "deathmatch" was just released today and requires a net connection!
Also the SDK was released today allowing mods and new maps, etc.

Obviously, a broadband connection is prefered.

The HL-2 package simply requires a good net connection  to take advantage of all it's present and future features any way you look at it.
Those without one unfortunately it will have to pass on HL-2.

P.S.
keep in mind that one you register "HL-2" online you no longer need a net connection to play it.
However, you will not recieve any updates either.

Ah poo!  I heard Half Life 2 had really good graphics, and was planning to get it (I didn't build a top o' the line system for mid range games), but if you think I'm going to open up my übercomputer to spyware/adware/viruses/hackers for one second, you've got another thing coming.  I download everything on the Dell, scan it for viruses, burn it to a disc, and then put it on the über.

I guess Half Life 2 is out. Angry

Oh well.  The fun of searching for demanding games is back on!  Considering I just beat Far Cry... Tongue

Its not really that bad.

I've never gotten a virus or trojan or anthing liek that.

You just have to be careful. HL2 is such an awesome game that its worth getting it no matter what. BTW, I bought the Steam versian (online download, its a better deal as you get more games) and have no problems with it.

I had no land-line and thus no internet on my reasonably high end pc for over 12 months!
Alas, a change of address to a blacklisted house prevented BT or NTL from giving me a line, strangely enough, I'm now with NTL....  Undecided Roll Eyes

Also, a few high ish spec PC owning friends of mine only have mobiles, and again, have no 'net at home.

Valves "Steam" system sounds a pile of steaming ....  Wink

Alright, got HL² now. I lended it from a friend of mine. I use the offline-mode, he uses the online-mode. Seems to work very well.

About the game itself: Stunning (really stunning!) graphics and it runs like a charm on my machine with a 1280*960 resolution, high details and 2*AA. The game itself is nice and brings out the true Half-Life feeling. I highly appreciate that the developers raised the amout of outdoor levels (awesome!) and there are some really crazy ideas, like Ravenholm. A city wiped out by aliens - except the priest who's a complete whacko (but very sympathetic). Grin
And everywhere around you: blood, zombies, dead bodies, blood, traps and oh, and did I mention blood?

Overall, I wouldn't rate this game as high as all the computer magazines did ( ~87% from me), but concerning graphics, HL² is a major milestone, especially because of the architecture, the water and the actors.

But the Steam issue is definately ruining Valve's reputation. Tongue

Okay, just to clear something up.  A internet connection is only needed on HL2 to initiate the game (ie. plug into a friends connection and unlock the game).  Once you have done that you can close the STEAM connection.  When you try to start the game you will get a warning message saying that it couldn't connect to STEAM.  You have the option of then playing in offline mode.  HL2 definently looks awesome.  If Far Cry turns you on then this will finish you off.  Grin  If cutting edge is your thing then it's a must have.  I think it rules over Doom 3 and Far Cry.

I made that post before I got SLI and was still using a x800 xt pe. An x800 xt pe is still enough to play the game at the highest resolutions and qualities.

Granted, given that, why on earth fork out for such an expensive SLI setup? - Great though I'm sure it is.

Never mind me, I'm only jealous!  Wink Grin

For shader intensive games like doom3 and far cry.

I can play doom3 in ultra quality in 16 by 12 res with 8x AA and 16x FSAA without my fps going lower then 30.
