I have not ever done this before so i wondered if any of you guys knew.

Basically i have a 40GB hdd as my master and always have had.  I just installed a 80GB slave hdd and formatted it to NTFS.  I am wondering how i could move FS9 from my master to my slave drive without uninstalling and installing?

Also how should i set my virtual memory up.  I currently have 768MB set up on the Master, should i put 768MB on the slave only? or both?

Thanks!  Wink

I'm thinking what you need to do is to install fs9 on the other drive, then you can copy and paste the folders from the old install into the new install...Wink

Just be careful with the payware files, by making sure that you have keys, ackups, etc...Wink Saves time trying to get the designer to give you a new one..Smiley

Just my two cent's, makes sense to me right now, but I could be wrong, I'm sure that there is a way to do it by editing the registry files as well, but I wouldn't mess with that...Wink

Sorry that its off topic, but when you CUT something from one folder to another is ther a risk of losing all of the files when they have been deleted but not written yet? Its an argument between me and my mum - I say its fine, she says its too dangerous to use!

Wont just moving your FS9 folder mess up the registry?

She's wrong, your right. Basically a move is a copy followed by a delete. If the move doesn't complete the original file will still be there. The problem is if your moving lots of files and it breaks in the middle, you will half one place and half another, but it's not a big problem.

As for the registry it won't cause many problems if you follow this method.

Copy the whole FS9 directory to a temporary location well away from the originals. Then uninstall the original install. Then install it again to a new location on the 80 gig drive. Then copy all the data from temporary store over the top of the new install. Then re-install, or repair install, over the top of the new and just copied over install (if that makes sense?). This is to make sure any files with location pointers are then updated to the new location.

If you really felt skillfull a trip through your registry might be a good idea to check the settings, but probably not needed.

Regards
Paul

PS When I said your right your mums wrong I was thinking moving to a different drive. If you are actually moving to the same drive then the TOC is edited and if something goes wrong during that, a very rare posibility, you can in theory loose your entire contents. Or not loose them, more not be able to access them. So if your moving to another place on the same hard disk it's just the pointer thats changed not the actual files location.

The files are never stored in memory, just either the pointer is changed to it's new location or it's copied to another drive and then it's original pointer deleted. In lamens terms anyway.

Regards
Paul

I did this on my old system a while back.
You need to be aware of something important.
If you add allot of self installing programs, especially payware, you will need to be familiar with how and where they install since they will always be looking to install the program or file into your fs9 folder which by default will be c/windows/programs files/Microsoft games/ fs9.

Just thought you might want to know if you are not familiar with file directories.
I also found that when I moved my entire sim to another drive, it never really ran as "fluid" as the one I originally installed it in.

I would make back ups of all your important folders, then un-install the sim then reinstall onto whatever drive you want.
Just my opinion!

It should be possible to install FS9 to the other drive by using the "duplicate install" method. Rename your existing FS9 root directory folder to any other name, let's say "FS9 old". This will hide the original install from the setup program & effectively back it up. Much quicker & more convenient than making a backup copy & moving all those files around. Then insert the CD & do a normal install to the other drive. This again should take no longer than moving the original FS9 directory. The original install can be safely deleted once all your addons are transferred.

The only problem I can see with this is that (unlike previous versions of FS) FS9 installs files to locations outside the FS9 root directory. This could mess up the registry entries. I've also seen problems reported with FS9 running off a secondary drive as Dave pointed out. I'm wondering if it might be better to leave it right where it is.

I don't think the hassle will be worth it, i am happy with the performance i am getting from FS9 right now so i will leave it where it is rather than break it or make it slower.

Thanks for your help! I knew i could rely on you guys to help me come to a decision!  Wink
