hi there

my computer wont stop crashing and i believe the reason is that my graphics card is overheating

it's an ATI Radeon 9800xt 256mb

the overdrive thermometer reads: 72º C
it's almost reaching the red line

i wonder if this is TOO HOT, or is it normal?

what would an average temperature be?

Here you go: average 9800XT temperatures found @
http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/abit9800XT/2spec.htm
(Quote: Average temperature ranges for the 9800XT is 60-70 degrees C when under load or at idle.)

Hope this helps,L1011blonde

If the graphics card was overheating, especially an ATI, I would have thought you would have seen artifacts and the likes before hand, i.e. funny colours and weird shapes etc.  Your temp doesn't sound to bad to me though as long as thats the temp under full load.

Do you get any error messages when it crashes?

What are you doing when the PC crashes?

i do believe the card may be overheating...

just now when i turned my pc on,  i had to quickly shut it off because it was making a very weird grinding sound...

i removed the side panel and looked for the source of this sound and found it to be the video card cooler...

after i poked it for a while... it started up ok

but i don't think it's cooling as well as it should...

my pc usually crashes after some time playing a heavy game... i then reboot and continue playing, but then it crashes again... more and more frequently

(this is most noticeable on FS... other games seem to crash only randomly... i think it's because FS demands more of the pc, thus, heats up the radeon a lot faster)

im keeping the side panel open now... i want to see if there's any difference in it's endurance...

c ya

hmm another thing... Tongue

i looked at that driverheaven review and realized something...

in a screenshot of the review you can see the thermometer and the overdrive gauge... when overdrive is off, the gauge reads zero

now on MY video card... the overdrive gauge is at 100% ALL THE TIME... it seems to be running at max overclocking even when the overdrive checkbox is OFF (mostly is)

this could very well be what's causing my somewhat brand new card to overheat

this is VERY weird... im gonna get to the bottom of this...
