What version windows you running?

If xp sp2 you already have an enhanced firewall to begin with, not sure about any others out there as of yet, but suppose that I should be figuring it out as I'm supposed to get DSL Monday...Smiley

Zonealarm is by far the best one.  It is very thorough and is free, unless you want to upgrade it to the pro edition.  I highly recommend Zonealarm.

I prefer Sygate Personal Firewall, it too is free and I find it more reliable than ZoneAlarm and Nortons (which they are much the same).

Where can I download the Sygate Personal Firewall? Does it allow you to use networks? I once used Zonealarm, but it took me months to figure out why the network wasn't working Roll Eyes

http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

The Personal firewall is free, for a little cash you can get the Pro version.
As for working with networks I'm uncertain as I know little about networking but the download is from the Sygate site so I'm certain you can find a answer there.

I also use SPF.  In addition, I've got NAV 2k4 and Adaware....the firewall in XP sucks.

I just recently tried Zonealarm on my bro's PC and we couldn't get FS workin on multiplayer with it lol.

So I brought a DG814 router of my mate at work for £25 for him.  Got rid of all the software firewalls and he now has a hardware one! Ahhh soo much easier.  I had FS up and runnin in no time, though I do have the same router so I knew how to set it up  Grin  This also helps reduce system resources.

If any of you are looking at buying software firewall and have a network card or onboard LAN then I would reccomend getting a router instead.  No need for the software firewall at all then!!

Don't fool yourself into thinking a hardware firewall is foolproof - they are NOT!

I've got both hardware router / firewall and Zonealarm but its quite possible to bypass both!

You can NEVER have enough security.

True, though you dont really need Zonealarm if you got a router firewall.  I ran stealth scans etc and my PC is reported as being invisible but whether it is or not who knows.

Way I look at it is if they really wanna hack you then they will whatever protection u got!!

Which is why I say don't rely on just a hardware Firewall!  Wink  Grin
