Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to CFS2 having come via FS2004 and developed an interest in warbirds. I'm particularly keen on flying boats. Last night I downloaded a PBY2 and when I slewed it out to sea it just sank! I have done a quick search on the forums but can't find anything on the topic. However I recall seeing something on a forum somewhere. Can any other forum members help?

Hi DrHurst-  Just curious--What exact PBY did you  D\L and use? I have about everyone  for CFS2  and FS98-fs2k2. Some sank; were not  made as amphipians for the sims.

The aircraft is Consolidated PB2Y-5 "Coronado" and the zip was PB2Y-5.ZIP I am wondering if this is for CFS1. The model starts with the floats down. Which is what made me slew it away from land and over water!

Yeah,
just had a look doc. it is CFS1, was a smallish file i take it?
I can recommend any of the Catalina's by Harry Follas & Brian Horsey, as they are  true amphibians that can  take off from a strip & land on water, largish file tho' around 4-5mb's, i have their Vickers Canso RCAF for my Euro stuff, and also a good PBY panel by Ickie Berlein, cant remember the pages tho' just do a search on the author names & pick the CFS2 ones.

Thanks for the advice. I will be more careful in the future. I also have the cat from Abacus. Have you tried the cat from the Catalina Group of New Zealand (which apparently is only for FS2002, not sure if that can be made to fly in CFS2). Cheers, doc Wink

I have been reading through the other forum posts, and the one on flying CFS1 planes in CFS2 seemed appropriate. Especially when they talked about adjusting the MDL files. I will download the software and give it a try, as I am using XP and several people indicated this may be the problem.

JUst for completelness sake, I thought I would let you all know I solved the problem. I contacted the plane's designer, who advised it was probably sinking because the gear was down!  (yep, I know it doesn't have gear, its a flying boat!) I restarted, raised the gear and it floats. And the boat IS for CFS2.

cheers

The Catalina is an amphibian. Until CFS2/FS2002 the usual method with 3rd party amphibians was to have 2 separate versions of the same model, one with gear for operating from land & one without gear for water. Most of the later CFS2/FS2002 amphibians should have functioning gear & be properly configured to float.

You can add the appropriate Aircraft.cfg [contact_ponts] float entries to CFS1/FS2000 floatplanes to make them float in CFS2. It's also possible that the FS2002 versions will work in CFS2 without any modification - except realiasing Panel/Sound CFG files if necessary. It's much easier & better to get the proper CFS2 versions. IMHO
