I see this FSS and a radio frequency at the airport (when you look at the map in the detail of an airport)

what does it meen and what does it stand for.

I am trying to learn all the radio frequency type and there usage.

I am using GPS to navigate but i have the feeling that using radio frequency could be a lot more fun.

mmh...don´t know exactly what you mean, but i guess the frequency is an VOR- frequency. Most bigger Airports have an VOR or NDB staion (if you don´t know what it is, that are stations you can assign your postion with, IN RELATION to the station....huh, funny phrase *g*), that are the numbers you see. It´s a bit more complex to explain it, just take a lesson in navigation in the FS (with awesome Rod Machado Grin

).

FSS = Flight Service Station. It's probably just a hold over from the real world aviation information that they used to develop their database. I doubt you'll use it in FS.

Call them if you need gas usually, there are lots of other reasons, I'm not terribly good at explanation so just google it. Or if you want to spend the cash pick up a Dictionary of Aeronautical English.

Actually, Flight Service Stations are ATC facilities which provide a variety of services, including weather breifings, enroute communications, and VFR search and rescue services. FSSs assist lost aircraft and aircraft in emergency situations, relay ATC clearances, original NOTAMS, broadcast aviation weather and airspace information, receive and process flight plans, and monitor navaids

This may be true if an airfield actually has an FSS, but I think you're thinking of a Unicom Station ???
