I was so impressed with the shots Kemplen posted from his new camera I decided to go into town & check it out for myself. To cut a long story short I parted with some of my hard-earned moolah & am now the proud owner of a brand new toy.
I couldn't wait to try it out but it was pouring hard with rain when I got home
so I had to wait till today. The very changeable weather was ideal for a good test of what it can do. Here's some of my first efforts.
I wanted to check out the zoom quality as this is one reason I got this particular model. This was taken on full zoom from a seat outside the main terminal at Shoreham. Lancing College chapel in the background. The marquees in the middle of the airfield are ready for the display this weekend.
So far so good. Now for some action shots.
This is my best one so far.
My Fuji S5000 is not a proper DSLR but it's a step up from my little F 401. It will take a little getting used to but I think the improvement in quality is obvious - especially in the variable light conditions I had this morning. I'm delighted with it so far.
Now all I have to do is learn how to use the blasted thing in time for the RAFA show.
Hope the weather improves.

Shots number 4 and 5 look cool. Looks like the Tomahawk is taking off over a lake under the R22.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

Thanks for the comments guys especially Andy. I wouldn't have tried it if it hadn't been for you.
I thought that cameras of this quality were way out of my reach. My biggest problem so far is in getting used to the viewfinder. It's fine for static shots but can be a tad tricky when the action starts. A proper SLR would be much better. I shall persevere & see what happens this weekend.

Hi Craig. Is yours the S602? If so, mine looks very similar. The biggest difference seems to be the 10x optical zoom. Mine was on special offer so I suspect it might be on the way out. I don't mind that as it suits me & you can often get a bargain. They update things so quickly these days & the new "improved" products don't always seem to be an improvement.

Very nice camera Doug, I only see a couple of shortcomings for my preferences but then, I have high demands on a camera......for the majority of general users, this is an exceptional camera which offers lots of features......I checked it out at

It must be catching! I've just brought one of these cameras
Although my old Sony has the same zoom as the Fuji it was just too slow for action shots. After having a new PC I thought it best not to push my luck too far by spending £800 on a Canon DSLR. I hope to give it a full test at Duxford next Sunday

LOL Snap.
One word of warning. Get in plenty of practice with it before taking any important action shots. My 2nd effort this morning was a complete disaster. Plenty of nice shots of an empty sky but nothng else. The shutter delay & digital viewfinder takes some getting used to after my little F 401.

Jeez Hagar, for somebody only a year ago started posting your shot, they really have become quite impressive! Great work! That last shot sure is impressive!!
Keep it up as I always look, but don't always comment!
Congrats on the new toy!

Tell me how you get on with it. Any tips will be helpful. I'm none too confident myself. It took me a year to learn to use the old one properly & the shots in this thread might be beginners luck.
That pesky viewfinder is bothering me. I still can't get the hang of it.
I'll be taking old faithful along just in case.
Tomorrow is my last chance to practice. With a bit of luck some of the display aircraft should be arriving. We had a lovely red sunset tonight so the weather might be OK. I hope the wind is in the usual direction so I can try my favourite spot. It wasn't today.

Thanks Ben. No chance of that. I know my limitations & do this for my own pleasure - I think.
