Most of my programs run excellent (MOH:AA for example, runs good or phenomenal! Grin) But both civilian and combat sims run in a frustrating manner.  I do strongly believe my graphics card is my bottleneck.  What would be the best way to loosen it up? (Rig is specified as Skorpion (Check sig)) Wink

well just go buy a new g/card then!  get a 6800GT or a 6800Ultra  Grin go on you know you want too.  Would be the icing on the cake!!

Just remeber most 6800GT over clock to Ultra speeds anyhow so if your happy over clocking get the GT.  My XFX 6800Ultra came with overclocking software so I guess the GT will too.

De-Wallstreeted. Wink

Skorpion Mk. V:
  • AMD Athlon 64 3000+
  • Asus K8V SE Deluxe
  • NVidia PNY Ti4200 64MB
  • Onboard Sound
  • 1 GB Corsair DDR
  • Hitachi 250 GB

The only thing is I'd like to stop blowing my paychecks on computer hardware, so if we could keep the price somewhere between 200-300 backaroos, it'd be nice. Wink I usually make 200-something bucks.

PS: Fret, the colors are there so that you can compare the great Skorpion to the pitiful Dell! Wink

Yup, your GF4ti is the bottleneck, another 512MB of RAM never hurts either....

Raid the local bank & go get a 6800GT or Ultra , Job done then I'd have thought.  Wink

Woulda been wasting your cash anyhow. 2Gig ram is overkill on a home system at the moment unless you are doing massive 3D CAD work or huge amounts of videoediting.

I got 1gig and cant get my system to use up more than 800meg of it at anyone time.  So with the money you have saved not upgrading to 2gig put that towards a new g/card and aim for the 6800GT.  Get 'Coolbits' reg tweek (Comes with some cards) clock to ultra speeds and off you go  Wink

So 6800s are the best thing to get?

Can you get the card without the game (Far Cry) bundled?  I read it was bundled on Cnet.  I don't like paying for things that I shant use. Tongue

Drats.  I hate eating up my money. Cry

Yes, 605, the 6800 will suit you just nice.

If your looking to save a bit, then go for the "O.E.M." version i.e. it'll come in a jiffy bag with no software other than a driver disk.

I did this when buying a Leadtek 6800 GT from www.overclockers.co.uk it saved me about £20 having said that, the bundled software was worth more than £20 - go figure! The 6800 is an excellent card, alas, I had to give the one I bought to the friend who's pc I was building.... 4 weeks later he's still happy with it and its reliably running overclocked to 6800 Ultra speeds (saving him approx £100 on a 6800 Ultra!)

My pick of the 6800's @ Overclockers would be this....

Leadtek WinFast A400TDH GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - OEM (GX-034-LT) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/GeForce_6800_GT.html
Its the exact card I bought, I'm looking to buy one myself once prices drop a little, I like you, hate spending money!  Grin

Paul.

Hmm...  Does the specific type of 6800 I go for matter?  I hate how NVidia has all these different companies make their cards. Tongue

Does Overclockers have a US site?  I would imagine S&H would be quite a bit from the UK to the US. Tongue

In fact, what are some good sites for hardware price searches?

Yes, the specific type does matter.

I love how nVidia based graphics cards are made by so many different manufacturers!!!!   Grin

It means that we are not stuck with a single "reference" design for our graphic cards. Manufacturers are able to "tweak" thier individual cards - for better or for worse - no doubt within guidelines set by nVidia under a license agreement.

This means we can buy cards with faster RAM chips onboard, more memory, different architecture, cheaper or better components, different PCB designs and custom colours.

It also means competition is fierce, bringing low cost to the end user.

This is probably the main reason we usually see nVidia cards as better value for money than the ATI equivalent.

ATI, as far as I know, allow different manufacturers  to produce cards based on their GPU as well.

It's up to the astute purchaser to research the product they are interested in thoroughly before buying it, ensuring they are getting what they want and what they are paying for.

The average user will find the research path difficult because of time or knowledge restraints, and therefore usually relies on word of mouth, retoric, advertising, professional advice or forums like these to make a purchasing decision.

Which brings us to a conclusion...... whether or not you trust the advice given here. If you are interested in the advice given here,  it can be tested by googling the hardware in question and researching the reviews and statistics on that particular piece of kit.... and further researching of the comparable reference design statistics to see how it compares with the standard product.

And, speaking of reference, here is the link you need, anybody who buys hardware should have this site in their favorites.

http://www.pricewatch.com/ or re-read my last reply to this post.

Let the buyer beware.

Aye.  What you said. Wink

I would definitely fall into the mainstream user.  I by no means like tinkering with my hardware or trying to keep up with all this, and am not the overclocking type.  I pretty much rely on advice given here after a bit of Googling. Wink In any case, is there any manufacturer that stands out in particular amongst the 6800 group?  And would I be better off getting a 128MB or a 256MB version?

Cripes.  So much info. Lips Sealed

As for the RAM amount.... I just wrote an essay on the subject in another post here. Check out my latest tirade in the " RAM " post. It's not so cut and dry, so check it out!

I hath read the documents at hand, and must say, of the possibilities presented, I shall pursue the acquisition of the Gainward model.  The only remaining question to be answered dearest Sir: Of what speed would you consider to be good in regaurds to RAM?
