Max out the settings and reduce them one by one until you reach the performance you are happy with, it's a personal preference.

There are 2 sets of settings, the driver settings within Windows, and the display settings within the Sim/ application.

Ludo,

I have the 9800XT also (see specs below).  I have all the sliders and check boxes maxed in the sim except MIP which is at 5.  Sight distance to about 60 if I remember correctly, 3-d detailed clouds, clouds high, AA 4x + AF 4x in the setup + off in the sim, ATI Overdrive activated, 1024x768x 32 bit resolution.  AI set 100% with some added PAI stuff.

But I still have problems of about 10-15 FPS on short final at a large international airport in a large complex jet at times.  Up in the air and away from stuff...... 40-50 easy.....with a simple aircraft and bush flying ... more.

best,

...............john

I always have my "Distance" setting at around 5-10 miles, which is pretty realistic when you are up in the air in a real aeroplane.... 8)...!
Anything beyond that is pretty fuzzy most of the time!

In real life, most airfields/airstrips can only be seen when you are almost on top of them... Grin...!

It also means that the program doesn't have to waste time and memory drawing un-necessary detailed scenery in the far distance!

That will often prevent "juddering" which the computer suffers when it has to load in large batches of detailed scenery from the hard drive while you are flying... Cry...!

Cheers all... Grin...!

Paul....low and slow, peering through the mist, in England... Wink...!
LOL...!

I find that if you turn Autogen down a notch or 2, and turn off Ground Scenery SHADOWS, you can pick up some good frames.

Have a look at this:
