One thing with XP.  SP2 has just been released.  U really need to get this as it has numerous security updates fo IE and without em you get all sorts even if you have a firewall etc.  The only down side is the file is 277meg took me over an hour to get it with 512 broadband so dread to think how long it will take on 56k  Sad

I got SP2 within 48 hrs on dialup!  Tongue

I threw out my 7 Amiga 500's this year too.  Wink

Fozzer, you could try the workaround fix outlined in the article above, it's no big deal once you've done it.....

My Win XP is still configured like Win'98 so I don't get lost, but I think I know my way around it a bit now.

You might not like the way XP takes over and does things automatically, I didn't. I've disabled every auto thingy I could find in my quest to keep the Op Sys from doing things by itself.

I've had service pack 2 for several months now and have no further updates so far. I use a third party firewall.

This is the most stable my system has ever been, and I don't think it's my fault ..........  Roll Eyes

Hi congo...!
Thanks for the reply... Grin...!
I've still got all my Spectrums various, C64's various, Amiga's 500, 500 plus, 1200, Atari's, Megadrives, etc, and all the harware and software, (including programming manuals), which accompany them....JOY... Grin...!

...the continuing memory, etc, saga....>>>

Just inserted my Win XP installation disc, and used it to do a pre-check on my system for incompatiblity problems with my existing software and hardware running under Windows '98 SE...!
Guess what...?
I've got a text file, about three flippin' feet long, telling me that just about EVERYTHING in my computer, hardware, software, kitchenware, tupperware, underwear, etc, will not/may not work under Windows XP... Angry...!!

Now I'm thinking that's a very good reason, at the moment, not to up-grade to Win XP...! Wink...

I've come to the conclusion that an Installation of Windows XP is only suitable for a computer with a clean hard drive and the bare minimium of hardware already existing.

At the moment it would involve un-installing most/all of my software, (much of which I would loose), and re-installing all of my various drivers for all my hardware again... Cry...!

Life it much too short for all this faffing about, so I will wait until my hard drive goes completely belly-up and loose everything, and I have no choice but to install Windows XP from scratch, and the rest of my hardware drivers all over again... Roll Eyes...!

This is no "simple, automatic" up-grade, replacing '98 with XP!
Did I ever think it would be... Roll Eyes...!
LOL...!

Thanks, but no thanks, Uncle Bill... Wink...!

LOL...!

Cheers congo... Grin...!

Paul

P.S. removed my "extra" stick of 256 Mb memory, (back to 512 Mb again!).
Haven't noticed much difference so far...but FS 2002 runs OK... 8)...!

P.P.S.  all you 8 bit computer enthusiasts, try the various Emulators for the PC. They work even better than the real thing. I have loads of fun with them, and Win '98 likes them too.... Grin... Grin... Grin...!
LOL...!

You are right, upgrading isn't a good idea, a fresh install of XP is the way to go, sry, I hadn't even thought about the upgrade option.

Don't worry about the incompatibility "List", I think it's more or less Bill's disclaimer statement and doesn't mean much usually. I have heard of one person so far that had something show in that list, and it actually DIDN'T work lol!

Personally, I had an old and cheap digital camera that I couldn't find XP drivers for......  Angry

You may even be better off buying another HDD, if you and the Lord are ok with that.........

At least you could mess around with XP and still keep your present system.

Hi congo...!

Fozzers reply: "With a 2-hour cut off each time...???"

Trying the fixes listed here, thanks to Scania...

Running: msconfig.

...see what 'appens...!

Interesting note you may remember: still having probs with getting  the system to boot up! and then recognising my correct processor size... Cry...!

Maybe the changes I've done in the msconfig files may help now... Wink...!

...Continued next week...!

LOL...LOL...LOL...!
