Read the file 'Texture Formats used by FS2002.rtf' included with martin wrights DXTBmp. Thats for the function of alphas, not just for fs2002.

I just tend to make educated guesses.

The alpha textures are basically just a copy of the textures done in grayscale.

Total black (0,0,0) on the alpha channel represents total reflectivity, like a mirror.

Total white (255,255,255) on the alpha channel represents no reflectivity, like cement.

For things like glossy paint, I use 175,175,175 or a little higher.  For bare metal textures try something like 100,100,100 or maybe a little lower.  Try different combos and see what you can come up with.
