Well I think I'm losing it. Everything maxed out, that relates to scenery/textures anyway. I do much flying in BC Canada but other parts of the world when the fancy takes me. I've got some brill scenery of BC by Holger Sandmann which is the best. This problem is by no means particular to that scenery.
At ground level and up to about 4,000 feet the scenery remains good. Climb above that to 10-12,000 and as you might expect you lose definition and clarity of scenery. It's when I come down to land I just seem to lose a great deal of texture definition. Airports and runways are OK. If I tweak settings at about 3000ft all is OK. By tweaking I mean 'drop' down a notch or two which is the opposite to what I thought would happen.
I'm running a 64mb GEForce 5700 Ultra card, 512mb RAM, 2.4 AMD Athlon processor, 60gb hd.  I thought my motherboard might be the problem. The card is x8 AGP but my board rating will only take x4 AGP which I've been told should not be a problem. FS2002 runs like a dream. Any comments, suggested tweaks would be gratefully received.

It would not hurt if you could add more RAM. You also might want to think about a new video card one with at least 128 meg ram. They are not that expensine they are going for 100.00 which is not that bad. I used a 64 meg video card for a long time on both FS2002 & FS2004 & I finally went out and bought a FX5200 128 ddr meg ram and it made a lot of difference.
About all you can do is to find a happy medium where you can get acceptable textures at any altitude. Rember that you can adjust other factors beside the texture sliders such as the way your aircraft are displayed.

Better yet buy an FX5200 with 256mb of RAM like mine, They are pretty cheap these days.

AMD Athlon 64 3700+&&GeForce FX5200 256Mb&&1GB DDR400 DC&&Seagate 500Gb SATA-300 HDD&&Windows XP Professional X64 Edition
&&&&That's right, I'm now using an AMD! I decided to give them another try and they kicked the pants off of my P4 3.4!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've been experimenting since my original post and have changed one or two things in the cfg under terrain. Touch wood, I've seen some improvement.
