Yup, thats the challenge my mate has set me, he's got a budget of £1,000 and nothing else, no case, mouse, monitor or even a keyboard bugger all in fact!

The main requirement is Far Cry & FS9 run @ MAX Settings !!!  (hence my opting for the 6800 and, no, he don't like Ati either....)

Ideas?

All hardware will no doubt be sourced from www.overclockers.co.uk

Oh he wants a p4c (800fsb) cpu. ideally 1gb of RAM and a nice CTR 17inch monitor and an OEM copy of XP....

Over to you guys.....  Cheesy

Thats gonna be very very trickey! 6800Ultra is £400 still at the moment, might have to settle with the GT and dabble with o-clocking.  I see what I can put together but I think his specs will suffer due to him not having anything.

Somthing of Interest.  Someone at work sent me a site that sells *Backup* copies of programs.  Law states your are allowed one backup copy of any software you currently own.  I noticed XP pro on this site for £15.  Unfortunately I dont have the link here and am not back at work until Wednesday, might try search it out  Grin

Yes, but he specificaly wants Intel, he's using it for video editing when he's not playing, and his video software requires a p4 for optimum results ,so he says....
£1000 is his absolute limit (I realise he's asking alot!)

I'm not too bothered about the card, it'll be a £240 6800GT overclocked to Ultra speeds. ( I know of 3 people who have done this with MSI's 128MB 6800GT  8)

Your quite right to say an AMD 64 for gaming, trouble is, the p4 is considerably quicker at video editing supposedly, Its his money, his choice I suppose.....  Roll Eyes

When I got my new PC (8 months ago) I wasn't sure that the 64bit AMD was even going to work. And as most of the AMD top brass were selling off large amounts of shares (worrying) I went for the P4c 3.2 with an ASUS P4C800-Deluxe.

I don't know what the point of me writing that was ??? But I've written it so I vote it stays!

Ended up with....... (deep breath!)

P4 Prescott 3.0ghz 800fsb, 1GB 3200 DDR (Dual Channel), Creative Audigy 2, Asus P4P800-E Deluxe mobo, Leadtek FX6800 GT 256MB Card ,160Gb S-ATA Drive, 19Inch CRT Monitor, Logitech Keyboard, M$ Intelli Mouse, Antec case  (WITH SHITE PLASTIC HINGE THATS ALREADY BROKEN! ) Angry Logitech Wingman FF Wheel,400w PSU ,XP Home OEM,Creative Inspire 51. Speakers, CD/RW (52x) ,DVD Drive and no floppy!

Everything powered up on the first attempt!  Grin just tried 3D Mark 2001 SE and got "out of the box" i.e. no tweaking, 18,500!!!!  Shocked Shocked

Interestingly, no sound, I've not got an Audigy on my own machine , I hear of problems with them.... I get that sneeky feeling those problems lurk...... Roll Eyes

Tonight its going to be bench tested (in silence if the damn audigy don't play ball.... ) with FS9..... Desert Combat and CFS2 & 3  (assuming sleep don't drag me to my pit.... Roll Eyes )

I'll grab some screenshots...... Lancaster's most  probable....

Trouble is, it isn't mine, & I have to give it to my £1200 poorer friend......  Cry I may consider doing a runner with it, trouble is, he knows where I live....  Roll Eyes

Seriously for a moment, building good pc's is bad for your own pocket, my PC suddenly feels like an also ran....

Paul

OK, No Hyper Threading optimizations or 'owt like that, sod all in fact ... still

WHILST Downloading 38MB of updates,  Grin I ran '03 and got 11,200!  8)  Shocked > Insert smiley for hit the floor! <  Grin

FS9 is happy & 1600x1280 FSAA, custom MAX settings, a solid 10(!) FPS - This sounds crap but believe me, it looks wonderful & runs absolutely stutter free -  at head height through the City of Westminster.....  Grin if anything, its slower @ 1024x768! - just as my FX5600 is interestingly.....

But WOW WOW WOW ! This little beastie has teeth, bloody big 'uns!  Grin

Screenies coming once stop playing....

Suggestions appreciated for ways to stop my friend getting this pc back.... I don't want to let it go!  Grin

More to follow.....
