Hi Guys,
Can someone give me a definative list on what scenery goes with what sim please.
I'm interested in getting CFS1 scenery into CFS2. Scenery is something I've not messed around with but would like to.
Thanks
Shessi

As a general rule of thumb, scenery from the previous version of FS will work in CFS. For example: FS98 scenery usually works very well in CFS1 & the same goes for FS2000 scenery in CFS2. Scenery designed specifically for CFS would obviously be better if you can find it. I can't remember if 3rd party scenery for CFS1 will work in CFS2 although I see no reason why not unless it uses default textures. The CFS1 default scenery is not compatible with CFS2.
PS. Check out my CFS2 Scenery Clinic.

Thanks Hagar,
I've seen your guide, and used them. I have had slight problem in trying to use third party CFS(1) scenery in CFS2. I do have a seperate scenery library outside CFS2 and tried to install an airfield just the same as ususal but it does not 'see it'? Is there anything I should be aware of or look for?
On another note;
Glad to see you've got through the 10,000 posts barrier!! Either you don't sleep, don't work or have Simviation piped directly to you wherever you are!! No really it's good to have such Guru's as yourself, it's certainly helps me keep going

Hi Shessi. Thanks for the kind words. If there's any doubt you can only try something to see if it works. If you installed it correctly & it doesn't display I would suspect that it's not compatible. This shouldn't do any harm & can be easily removed.
If you give me an example of a problem file & tell me exactly where to download it I'll check it out for you myself. I don't really see the need for 3rd party CFS1 scenery in CFS2. There should be proper CFS2 scenery available for most areas covered in CFS1.
PS. It's been a while since I had anything to do with CFS1 & maybe I gave you the wrong advice. On giving this some thought it's quite likely that 3rd party scenery for FS98 & CFS1 will not be compatible with CFS2. The methods used for flatttening the default mesh are different.

You should be able to use 3rd Party scenery for FS 2000 in CFS2, as long as the scenery doesn't call for any textures that are only shipped with FS 2000.

Hi Strato,
Sorry I wasn't clear. I am talking about airfields rather than area scenery. I have installed as per others(that show up) but some just do not show up, even using the FS95 option?!
Also if starting or flying near some airfields I get the warning that a certain object(s) was not displayed and a hex location. Obviously not all add ons come with everything but is there a way of finding out what item is not being displayed?
Cheers
Shessi ???

This sounds like missing textures to me. Most likely CFS1 default files not included with CFS2. What I need is an example so I can check it out myself. It's still not clear to me why you wish to use this old scenery in CFS2. There should be a pretty wide range of proper CFS2 scenery available for most areas. You might need to look around for it & some might possibly have disappeared since I was involved with this.

Hey Shessi,
I think it would be easier in the long run to do a CFS 2 version of the airfield from scratch. This way you don't have to worry about the error messages. Not only this, but the scenery may also call for 3rd party add-ons that are no longer availiable ???
It's also likely that the textures for the CFS 1 version are not all that good by today's standards ???

Hi Strato,
Yes, I think you're right. I'll have to get my airfield thinking cap on. I'm not so bothered about the accuracy of the field but it's location. I want to put down as many German Nightfighter airfields as poss, I've already installed the NJG 7th fields.
I think it would be quite simple to copy and rename the necessary airfields and then manually update the airbases data file for location? What about the height factor?
Pointers, ideas?
Thanks Shessi

Hi Shessi. I diidn't want to interfere but seeing that Strat hasn't answered yet ..............
If you know the rough locations of these airfields it should be easy enough to create your own with FSSC. I don't know if you're using them in missions but in that case you would only need a basic field with a runway like the defaults. Add the extra goodies in the missions themselves. Latest FSSC here.

Hope this is some help. I'm sure that Strat would say much the same.

It's been a while since I've done anything with CFS 2, so I'm not 100% sure, but doesn't this method create a problem when using the airfield in Free Flight. I mean, all you would see is just the airfield minus the buildings and etc ???
Might be an idea to build two versions. One for Free Flight and one for Missions/Campaings ???

OK. Good luck. My point was to start simple. A basic field with a runway is all you really need to check it out. You can always add to it later if you wish.
I'm not sure about anyone else but having a basic airfield in Free Flight never bothered me. I use it mainly for troubleshooting, testing/setting up aircraft or simply flying around for fun.
