This program any good? I only see people mentioning up to version 7.

I have Adobe Photoshop (latest version and find it a hair pulling experience) and would rather find a simpler program for creating repaints.

Hi SaVas. I've been using PSP for many years & wouldn't be without it. I found it much easier to use than other graphics editors & I tried most of those available at the time. I started with PSP4 & graduated up to PSP7. When the free trial expired I missed it so much I went out & purchased it. Each new version is similar but obviously has various improvements over the last one. I found this took a little getting used every time I updated but not really a problem. I assume that PSP8 will be much the same. I believe that Felix has PSP7 & 8 so might be the best person to give advice on this.

PS. I think there should be a free trial version of PSP8. You could try it & see what you think. Only you can tell if it suits you. Smiley

Thanks hagar. It isn't a very expensive program, and figure if I don't like it for repaints, I can use it for something else anyway, so methinks its going to be purchased soon!

And Felix, care to leave a comment or your opinion as well?

I've been a registered user of PSP since v.1.0, when it was a non-limited shareware.

Adobe's Photoshop is the graphics industry "standard", and the Corel Photopaint/Draw suite is also powerful.  Each program has its benefits.  For my purposes, and epecially since I'm used to it, the Paint Shop Pro versions are my tool of choice.

I actually have both PSP7 and PSP8 installed.  Some things are easier/faster for me in PSP7, I do others in PSP8.

Of course, there are freeware programs that offer similar (and possibly "extra" features )  but I prefer the PSP series.

Felix, I have been reading that there are numerous bugs in version 8. Would you say that this is an accurate statement? It seems most prefer PSP 7 with the exception that its a slower program compared to 8.

I am just looking for the best in the PSP line Smiley

I have no comment, I probably don't use more than 15% of either version's capabilities.  Example, any alpha channel manipulation I do with either VAS-Gold (on the source file) or FS Repaint! on the compiled model.

HiSavas,
I have had all of the last 4 editions of PSP and i have ended up selling my version of PSP8.
i find 7 a lot more user friendly with very minimal disadvantages. i e, hardly any.

go PSP7 Grin
of course you should test both first.

Felix kind of worried me lol.

I just want one program to be able to make all repaints with a not so time consuming learning curve as my time is short and I do not have as much time to invest in it as I would like.

I have been reading not so favorable PSP 8 reviews. 99% of the bad ones say PSP 8 is decent but buggier than a Florida summer, and 100% say PSP 7 is the way to go. I think within the week thats what I will be getting is 7.

For flightsimming purposes, PSP8 is not that big an "improvement" over PSP7.

One really useful tool that PSP8 has is the background eraser.  I use this in some of my repaints, when I need to take a badge (or similar) from an external source, I can take out the background in full and merge in as a new layer.

I normally edit the background on a badge or emblem using Ms Paint. Making the area that I want to be transparent, Red. Then all you do is load the bitmap into PSP and set the transparency to Red, after that you can copy and paste the badge/emblem onto the texture 8)

Why not do it all in PSP & done with? It can do anything M$ Paint can do so much better & easier. Saves all that messing about. I never understood why you need to use separate programs for all this stuff. Roll Eyes

Just for the record, I ordered version 7 instead of 8, so hopefully I should have it in a few days, and maybe, JUST maybe I will have some time soon to tinker with it Cheesy
