1944 United States scores major victory against Japanese in Battle of the Philippine Sea

On this day in 1944, in what would become known as the "Marianas Turkey Shoot," U.S. carrier-based fighters decimate the Japanese Fleet with only a minimum of losses in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

Certainly this battle broke the back of the Japanese navel airforce and crowned many US aces as well as prove the F6F Hellcat rule the skies over te Pacific.

Given the state of the IJN at the time, even an F4B-4 pilot would have become an ace!

The IJN admiral made a crucial mistake in thinking that most of his missing planes had landed safely at land bases, so heprepared another attack wave.
