I think bands that are not very well known are much better than mainstream bands because it isn't about the money, they have to rely on being good and they excel at that.  I listen to heaps of christian rock and since most of them have not made it big in the secular world, the music they are producing is of a high quality and I can listen to it over and over again and again and not get bored with it.  Todays music such as poofy nsync and brittney spears they are just after money and attention, they have no desire to communicate any feeling through their music.  Go back to dire straits or even a band such as Relient K (i mean Christian not well known in secular circles but very good) they just put so much feeling into their music because that is their outlet to emotion.  Britney's outlet going on what her music is primarily about is through a certain bodily orifice.  Sex sells and thats what shes got going for her and its working.  Most musicians such as britney and nsync arent about leaving a lasting music legacy they are more like WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAAM, they've made their money, they are happy.  I mean, I don't listen or really even like Kiss or AC/DC but they must have done something right to still be as popular as they are today, and AC/DC, their is a movie about them out now or soon.  Bands such as the Beatles or Abba are absolutely timeless, but I would rule out any of the lesser known rock bands of today, who despite working in a 'watered' down industry, display the talent to build lasting legacy's.

Cheers

Amen brother!

i also agree with theone about the small record labels and all, i mean look guys, i love music more than i love naything else, i have a band and we play for the fun of it, we dont give a flying *^&(k about the sound or the looks or anything see? we do it cuz thats our love, and if other guiuys like our stuff well thats great, but as long as we're happy with it is fine. i agree with who ever said that most of the timeless stuff done was done by ppl who werent even thinking of fame when they started u know?thats wat all this is about. there are a few small record houses here in London Ontario, and we have a constant battle of the bands even going on downtown, not many people know about it, but man! u have to see the bands that play there!!! many big names come here too, not too long ago jhonny ramone dropped by, no one knew, he was noticed by the bar tender.... aparently he came to see wat the thing was about and he liked it....see? thats talent. today's music is just a corporate sell out, at least the mainstream stuff, so people like us end up makin stuff to amuse ourselves and a few others.... STICK IT TO THE MAN!!! Roll Eyes

I personally cannot stand any pop, rap, R&B, hip-hop, or anything like that. just busts my head in to hear it. but what really makes me want to hit someone with a chainsaw is people like Avril Lavigne, or bands like Busted or the Rasmus, who try to be rock and say that they're rock. i mean, in my veiws, a rock band is usually a drummer, a guitarist, a bassist, and a singer. now let's see, um Busted are three guys who sit there strumming G minor all the time without their guitars plugged in, and Avril Lavigne can't sing without a computer changing her voice.

I quite frankly hate all music on the radio.

  • Classical - No percussion, no spirit.
  • Opera - What opera?  Do you see Opera?  Tell me when you do...
  • Country - The most systematically mass produced genre.
  • Spanish - Can you tell one from the other?  And you can bet they all have the word "amor" (love) in them.
  • Hip-Hop - Let my Po-Po cappin' ice hang to my Hummer.  In every song.
  • Pop - With all that pulsation and digital enhancement, it sounds like it was made for people with ADD.
  • Modern Rock - Get some guy with no voice to moan and scream, and you have a punk band.
  • "Old" rock - I know you guys will hate me for this, but the only difference I see in the two rocks is the guitars are whinier and the vocals are more strained.

Of all of these, I have to make myself like the old rock to listen to the radio.  I will admit though, there are some songs like "The Wall" which are good.  In fact, they're damn fine.  But they're few and far inbetween.  I usually give up and pop in a CD.  The only time I listen to the radio is for my Walton and Johnson radio show, and that's it.

I say the only hope you have in the music scene is to find a source, but I do mean a good source (I haven't stopped listening to Rammstein the day I found out about them), and depend on it, it's the only way.  If Rammstein ever breaks up, I don't know what I'll do, it's the only rock I like.  The only other band that comes close is "Fear Factory" and the British "Overseer", but the former broke up years ago, scream too much for my taste and the latter's future seems unsure, and still isn't music I can listen to non-stop.  The only thing that offers a glimmer of hope is the newer Slipknot material.  My whole point with this is radio's, the big music pusher, problem is it has three stations that play the same songs.  If we could just branch out a little bit...  But I think I'm spoiled in Houston, I went to San Antonio and there couldn't have been more than 10 stations on the dial. Shocked

Sometimes I buy war games just for the music, and I usually get some of the best classical I've heard (MOH:AA's Tiger Tank theme), and commercials feature good music sometimes.  Again, you just have to become overly dependent on one source.  It's sad, but it's the only way I've found.
