It wasn't quite Duxford but the owners of a local airstrip arranged a fly-in to commemorate D-Day last Sunday. I was kindly invited to attend. The first fighters to fly over the beach-heads in the early hours of June 6th 1944 took off from here. It was quite an experience to be there 60 years later. These are the squadrons based at Deanland in 44.
Over 70 aircraft were expected from all over the country. Here's some of the first arrivals.
The Isaacs Fury. A scale replica of the Hawker Fury pre-war fighter. I'm told it was the brainchild of one of the Supermarine design staff at Eastleigh. I can just see Ozzy in this.
Fournier RF5 powered sailplane.
Another home-build. It looks like a 2-seat version of the Fury.
The tiny Taylor Monoplane. They don't come much smaller.
At first I thought it was one of these. The Druine Turbulent. Another tiny plane.
The pretty little Kitfox.
Unfortunately I had other commitments & had to leave early just as things were starting to warm up. The strip is now too small for warbirds but it's possible some did a beat-up on their way to other events.
