What was the ultimate fighter of WWII. It's all up to opinion and I want to know yours. I've picked the best from each major nation involved in the war. I'm no expert on Russian or Japanese aircraft so excuse me if my picks aren't actually the best the nation had.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. To your list I would add the F6F Hellcat (US) and A6M Zero-sen (Japan).  Both valid candidates, with pros and cons.

The Corsair was far superior to the Hellcat. Many historians agree that it was the best piston fighter of WWII. This was before the Seafury beat it.

I was thinking of adding the Zero but I'm no expert on Japanese aircraft. Based on experiance from CFS3, the Ki-43 is better. Not the best thing to base my choice on so I'll take a look at it later. The Ki-61 Hien "Tony" is also a valid candadate according to my guide book.

My personal thinking of "ultimate" is a combination of performance and contribution.  In that sense, I chose the P51, which was an excellent fighter in its own right, plus it served in significant numbers in both major theatres of the war.  That, for me, gave it the nudge as the "ultimate" over the Corsair.

Actually some Gloster Gauntlets were used operationally early on in the Middle East (Iraq/Syria) and East Africa.

Hard choice between the Spit and the 'Stang.. but I'm American, so that tipped the scale for me Smiley  The Yak-9 is tempting too, gotta love any airplane with a 45mm gun in the nose.

Corsair. If it was good enough for the 'Jarheads' to use in three wars without changing it much. Its good enough for me. I kniw , I know. The 'Stang made 2 wars but the Corsairs just got more  "personality" more "grit".

I'm going to change my vote...

P-38 Lightning.

Day/Night, Bad Weather, Fighter, Recce, Tactical bomber, VIP Transport, Strategic Bomber, Personel Transport...name a task and the Lightning probably did it.

Lockheed even proposed the Model 822 for carrier ops!

Gotta love the Lightning. Smiley

If thats how you chose, then shouldn't you have chosen the Hurricane? Roll Eyes Grin

The Hurricane didn't have the range and overall performance of the Mustang.  OF course, one could say that the Mustang was a reconfigured Hurricane .. Smiley

For the japnese the best was definatly  the Ki 84 Hayate (Frank) or the Ki 100.  Certainly not the oscar, it was obsolete by the end of the war, having only two 12.7mm Mgs for armament, and even more flammable that the zero.  The Tony had good performnace, but the engine was unreliable.  The design was good though, as the Ki100 is essentially a ki61 with a radial engine.
For the US, the P47 or the 'sair.  not the mustang - I don't like most aircraft with liquid cooled engines (poor durablilty).

I would agree with you, and I'd give the nudge to the Ki84, if only because of slightly higher numbers (production).   The N1K2 would also be a contender.  Towards the end of the war, the Japanese were coming out with serious fighters, having adopted the American "hit hard and move" philosophy, rather than the pure dogfighting/aerobatic philosophy, as tipified by the Oscar, Zero, etc.

Personal preferences aside, I admit it is hard to choose ONE from between the major American types.  All three (four, if you include the F6F Hellcat) lasted in US service into the '50s (Reserve and National Guard service).

But, to stand fast with OTTOL - da 'jug, baby!

No crud! On CFS2, i was in a corsair with it's big radial, attacking the Akagi, got hit directly with a flak shell, blew off six (yes, SIX) cylinders, and i still made it back to base. (Apart from the fact that my port wing got shredded from the flying shrapnel). In a mustang, however, one of the destroyers shot three (yes THREE) 7.62mm rounds into my engine and radiator, and the engine siezed. no, it more than siezed! when i got down to 100 feet, it blew up and sent me spiralling into the waves! plus, that heavy radiator sunk as soon as it hit the drink, nosing me over and trapping me in the plane! Nah, liquid-cooled engines suck big-time. a radial P-38 would have been better than the original.
