I just started repainting (or trying to) and when I wanted to see if it worked, the paint wasn't there! How do I get my paint on to the plane in the game???

You really don't give much information.
Did you save the textures as straight 24-bit (16 million colors) bitmaps? If so, FS won't recognize it.
Did you change the texture names?
etc.
etc.
What did you do, what texture conversions did you do?

Just a thought here but you did reload the texture after editing it and then saved it right?
The only other thought I have is if you mean that the paint does not show up in the sim. If this is the problem, did you forget to add an entry to the cfg file?
Let us know exactly what you mean and we will get your problem solved.

I uploaded the new paint into DXTbmp and saved it, copied and pasted the new texture folder into the aircraft folder, and finally went into the cfg and added another entry.
PS: This was just a test paint, so it was crap, but how do you paint and leave the unique texture of the default planes.
