Hello again, its been a while since my last post. After some recent pc problems I did a complete re-install of CFS3...Everything seemed fine until recently I've been getting a 'configuration file is out of date, please restart CFS3' message when I start the programme...obviusly restarting CFS3 just takes me back to the same message again. I remeber there being a good general fix for certain problems, which involved deleting loads of CFS3 files...they are re-created by the programme when you start up again. Does anybody know for sure what the 'safe to delete' files were again ? I remember it solved a few problems for me before. I've been scanning through old posts trying to find it but no luck.
Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, can't help with this one - although I had the same message the other day, restarted CFS3 with no problems (or the same message) but the configuration had been reset to the lowest video mode etc - although it was a blessing in disguise for me - if you've read my 'where did all the birdies go' thread. I hope this isn't going to happen every six months (which is approximately how long I've had CFS3)

Good luck! If you find an answer, please let us know... Ta!

All right, go to start, microsoft games, CFS3, and press Run CFS3config. Then go to file and click on Default settings. Then run CFS3, you gotta reset your display settings though, and see if it works. If it doesn't then ask Ozzy.

If that does not work here is what you got to do, it happened to me a lot, because I kept having problems with my video card.

In windows XP,
First go into your
C:\Documents and Settings\**YOUR NAME**\Application Data\Microsoft\Combat Flight Simulator 3.0\

then you will see the problematic files (they sometimes get retarded so try not to drop you computer on its head as a baby)

The files you are going to need to "exterminate" are

ConfigOverrides.xml
and
DefaultOverrides.xml

You can just delete these files, (or cut and paste somewhere else just in case you are overly careful, don't worry it will be rewritten when you reopen CFSConfig)

Now go to your CFS 3 folder and double click "cfs3config.exe". Go to file -> default settings (this will replace the files you just deleted) then go to file-> custom settings and go ahead and put your settings back to what they were or just start up CFS3 and set it up from there

Now you are ready to fly and scream
"Auchtung Hauptman, der Flugzen brennt" (yes I don't speak any german and I got it off a magazine but it still sounds cool)
(what its supposed to mean is "hey Captain, your plane is on fire)

You don't need to delete those files, if you just run cfsconfig, it will overwrite those files. And I beat you to the post random...muhahahahahah...felling evil. Grin

P.S. I thought Auchtung means attention, as in a life threatening way.

-Hey I got Dial up! Grin

-by the way wouldn't your plane being on fire be life threatening?

-Yeah I had to delete those files myself most of the time because it kept getting corrupted with all the video card switching so I had to delete those files, don't know if it would happen to you

I get this problem sometimes and all I have to do is just run cfsconfig, never had to delete anything.

And if you cut the fuel then the fire will die, unless your one of those Bf-109s which burns better than my lighter fluid. Grin

Thanks for the replies. I did try re-running the CFS3 config but still no dice...then I found an old post over in the Firepower forum which mentioned re-naming the Combat Flight Simulator 3.0 folder, which I did... And you know what ? Bingo...CFS3 runs again. I did have to re-run the config afterwards to get my old settings back. Not quite sure how it worked but it all seems fine now. Cheers. Grin

It's the wierd and wonderful world of Combat Flight Simulator 3. Hope you enjoy. I know I'm really starting to appreciate this game, now I've got all these third party and other neat addons.

Yeah i know what you're saying Goose...i've been away from the game a while but I come back and we've got a Swordfish, Heinkel 111's and a Condor from Groundcrew. Great stuff. What with my Firepower addon as well, it's certainly a change from a year back when there wasnt much except stock repaints available. I havent gone off this game at all in the time I've had it, despite the problems and several re-installs. Keeps getting better.

yeah or you could've done that it would have done the same thing, rewritten the two defective files

ConfigOverrides.xml
and
DefaultOverrides.xml

make shure you move all your old files back into the folder eg (.xca are the custom joystick mapping files, and your unlimited pilots.xml) the other stuff is all default but unlimited pilots stores your kills and stuff.

BTW do you reccomend Firepower?

Yeah I would recommend Firepower.  It was £20 well spent, no regrets.
