The 9600pro by far, i would not recommend the 256Mb model of either of those cards, it not as fast as the 128Mb models.  The 9600pro is faster than the 5700, especially in directx.

hmmm.. I was considering  the 9600 pro until i saw how many people had problems with this card, see in the link (whole 78 pages of unsatifactoriness Shocked )

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/8596/

lols, so I'm probably goin for the Fx5700 unless someone comes up with a good argument hehe..

Also would having 256MB of graphics RAM be good in FS2004 becos it has lotsa textures and stuff?

If you have a KT400 mobo you may have problems, other than that you will have no problems.

The FX5700 Ultra is a nice solution (faster than the ATI card) if you go with the nVidia. The plain vanilla FX5700 isn't as fast as the 9600 pro though.

I briefly tried out a 9600XT on my AMD rig (nForce2 chipset) and had no probs using the latest drivers and a fresh install of WinXP.

If you want something faster than the 5700U get the 9600xt.

Actually, in the tests I saw at Tom's Hardware Guide, those cards are practically identical in performance, but I haven't compared them myself.

Also, I'd like to add my observation that the 9600XT I tested was only slightly better than my current GF4 TI4200 in the default Seattle flight in FS9. The 9600XT was definitely faster in antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, (heavy cloud, distant textures), that gave it the edge. For raw speed, the old GF4 TI's are still up there with respectable performance.

You must remember the 9600xt uses P.S2.0 aswell. the Ti does not.

If you compare the 9600xt in DX9 modes, like modern games, to the 5700U the 9600xt wins by far.

What's P.S2.0 ? Oh, I get it, I wouldn't know......  Cry

Also, Hyvry1_Delta, have you compared these cards yourself, say on the same or similar machines, I'm really interested in finding someone with personal experience in the comparison.

Pixel shader 2.0.  It gives the unbelievably realistic shine on aircraft and water etc.  Not the strange looking shine.

No not the 9600xt and the 5700U, i have with the 9600xt and teh 5200.  The 9600xt wins by far, obviously.  I am going from what i read and see as benchmarks, also from what i know from guru3d.

I can't right now or for a few days, but i will by the end of next week.  My pc is in pieces (partially), i am revamping it a bit, also replacing a DVD drive that broke this morning for unknown reasons, it was a Sony one aswell.  I am getting a combo drive to replace it.

1.5yrs for me.  I am switching to Lite-on, i have been told they are very reliable and perform very well.  Hopefully it will last atleast 5 yrs, that is what expect a drive to last atleast, 10 years would be a good amount though, considering i am a moderate user.

I am just waiting for parts for my pc to arrive so that it can be up and running again and i will post my shots with this card, which actually will be the first shots i have posted with my card on SimV.  The other shots in the freeware forum are with my old card, Radeon 7000.

Sorry for the double post:

Notice the nice water shading with the sky and sunlight reflecting off the water.

I cant tell the difference, this is with my DirectX 8 compatible GeForce4 TI4200. My aircraft reflections are good too, as you can see from this black EF2000

That is a close up shot, also those clouds are maxed out in the background, in fact all settings maxed out (inc 4xAA and 16xAF).  I was getting 30fps locked in that shot.

This is everything maxed out on the TI4200, remember, it's a DX8 card, so why are there reflections and wave textures (non standard textures), or do they render differently on DX9 cards?

I am wondering whether M$ put any DX9 features in this sim.  Can you put the water setting to high and it stay high, because on mine i can.  If you can't on yours then i wonder what the benefit of the high setting is.

yes the setting will stay on high, but the detail slider above it, (which shows up the little speckles), goes back to terrain only, which isn't really an issue at all unless it's a very close up shot of the water.

Believe me, I was very surprised to see the supposed DX9 effects on my card.

I found out why FS9 is DX9, the graphics are DX8.1 and some of the sound is DX9.  That is why FS9 uses DX9.  It uses P.S1.4 not P.S2 (which you need a DX9 accelerated card for)

You mean a DX9  soundcard?

I thinks DX9 drivers for the soundcard would do, but i don't know a lot about the differences between DX8.1 sound DX9.0 sound, but FS9 is definetly DX8.1 graphics and some parts of the sound are DX9.0.

I have not noticed any cards boosting about which DX they are accelerated for, this leads me to believe it is driver related.
