Hi, all;
I was about to double up my RAM from 256 to 512 DDR/PC2100, as a last boost to my W98SE system before a major upgrade of the basic computer when I read (page 30 of Smart Computing of 04/04) that "Win98 can't use more than 320MB of RAM and actually slows down on systems with more RAM"  Other opinions usually state 512 is the max, with no remarks about slowing down if 320 MB is exceeded. Comments are anxiously solicited. Cheers!!

It is 512Mb, anything higher and win98 won't utilise it.
It will be a good upgrade.

Windows '98SE.

I've got the maximium of 512 Mb DDR Ram, (2 X 256), but if I am running the flight sims, (FS2002/2004), I have to shut down ALL of the programs running in the background, except for Explorer and Systray, otherwise the program stutters while the remaining small amount of memory left desperately tries to re-arrange itself... Shocked...!
Many times I am left with a mere 123 Mb of memory!
(Explorer, (the Windows program), alone takes up an enormous amount of available memory).

Try this program to test your memory size* and usage...>>
...amongst other things...

Aida32.

Thanks all
Still got a question, though; and from fozzer's comment maybe the article's claim of "anything over 320 will slow Windows down" has some merit?? While I do a clean boot before running FS9, FS2k2 works OK with clear skies, and will occasionally stutter a frame or 2 with clouds or day - twilight transitions. This with my 1.2 Duron /266 FSB system. I do have the aida program but haven't figured out how to make it measure with another program operating. Any more suggestions?

Hi Dodger...!
The more Ram you have the better. Up it to 512 MB, the limit, and you will be OK.
To use the Aida program to check memory, cpu usage, temperature, etc, run FS 2002/FS2004 in windowed mode and run the Aida program.
It will display the data in real time.. Wink...!

(My old AMD 850MMX with 256 Mb of Ram ran FS 2002/FS2004 fine with certain settings reduced, (trial and error)...)... 8)...!

Make sure your new memory matches the speed and type of the existing memory.

Cheers...!

Paul.

P.S. ..don't forget the tip to shut-down background running programs to free-up the memory... Wink...!

Thanks fozzer; I did manage to figure out how to get the results from aida (run FS in window - who knew??) and yep - sometimes down to 20 MB unused, with FS2002 at 30-40 FPS. As mentioned, I do a clean boot to run FS9 - that pretty well eliminates extraneous stuff from running. More memory coming up!!

Hi Dodger...!
Glad to know you have got it all sorted out now... Grin...!
..If you have any spare memory left over, send it over to me, please, my poor old brain is getting a bit deficient in that department.... Cry...!
