Someone explain to me why you, the end user, sit in the right seat instead of the left in FS9 helos?

I know very little about helos. I always understood that apart from in the early days they are generally flown from the right seat.

I know that some versions of the Bell 47 are flown from the left.

Hmm, ok. I was assuming they were like planes and American cars.

(Here's a question for you Brit's: If I buy a boat in the U.K. and ship it over here to the States, will the driver sit on the right like your cars, or will it switch to the left side like our cars?)

I know as much about boats as I do about helos. Roll Eyes

I believe that international maritime law states that oncoming vessels should both give way to the right. In this case I assume the steering wheel on a power boat would be on the left hand side.

On the subject of helos I found this interesting conversion kit for the Bell 206/407. http://www.paravion.com/products/left_seat_pilot/left_seat_pilot.htm

Facinating. Thank you Hagar.

I always assumed that they were like aircraft.  I'll need to buy that when I buy a retired Kiowa Warrior someday. Smiley

Now if I could only get one for FS9. Angry

If I'm not mistaken, you drive most boats from the right side, and some from the middle ???

Yeah, over here in the states fret. I'm talking of importing a boat from the U.K. so that the wheel is on the left like in one of our cars.

I'm not sure of my facts but this wouldnt necessarily be the case. Cars are either left or right-drive to suit the conditions of the country they're used in. We drive on the left-hand side of the road in the UK so it's traditional & more convenient for the driver to sit on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

I wouldn't think this applies to boats as maritime law is international. I've never thought about it before. It might be purely a matter of preference or tradition with different boat builders. The next time I visit our local marina I'll check this out.

I have just one thing to say.
Anyone ever look at a mail truck you know the one your local mailman drives. Where do you think that truck was made. US or UK. It does not matter if you import one vehicle from one place to another you do not have to move the stering wheel. You will have to make any emission changes though.

I don't know about mail trucks as my mailman makes deliveries on a pushbike. Some of our milk floats have the steering wheel in the centre as do many boats.
...

I think it's a matter of preference with boats as they don't have to apply to the rules of the road. I've seen pictures of British built boats with the steering wheel on either side or in the centre. I'm sure it's not impossible for a US boat manufacturer to build one to your own requirements.

My first car was a German Taunus with left-hand drive which was not ideal in traffic or when overtaking, in fact it was potentially very dangerous. That's why most of the cars in this country are right-hand drive.

I think most light boats are right-hand drive (I've been told) so that the weight counters the torque of the prop when the boat's going to plane. I don't know how accurate that is.
As for helicopters; most have a right-hand pilot because a) the collective is in the pilot's left hand and b) you never, ever take your hand off the cyclic when the 'copter is moving. That places the hand free to work in the center of the cabin; where it has access to the controls. That's what I've been taught anyway. Smiley

Good answer!
The theory make sense in both cases! So it appears the answer could actually be found in the use of common sense!
Something I usually lack towards the end of the week! Grin
